I was going to say Daytona but then I realized I was only thinking of that due to the grey market price. Actually I don't believe any Rolex is over-rated, maybe over-engineered but that's a good thing.

Most overrated Rolex

Rolex, just to simplify things here.

Lots have said DAYTONA C, to me that’s the best value if you can get one from an AD.

Some say Submariner, I agree but still think it’s a great watch if bought from an AD at manufacturer prices.

Lots of superhero and soda drink watches selling way over AD prices.......that to me is overrated. Just for a little color? Yes, GMT has a complication and so does a DAYTONA C so why is the Daytona overrated at retail ?

Let’s just enjoy our watches and if your ok with paying over retail, enjoy yours as well

I'm with you. The Daytona does absolutely nothing for me. And like you said, to each their own. I'd never ask a Daytona owner why they prefer that to another watch. May as well ask them why their favorite color is their favorite color.

On topic, I think the most overrated watches can be found at any gray dealer. And there are far too many to claim that only one holds the title.

It (the Ceramic bezel SS Daytona) does nothing for me but if people like it then at retail price from an AD it's a decent buy like any other sport watch...but when people, and not just a few, are paying 18, 19, 20 grand for it they are in effect overrating it or at the very least overvaluing it. It may take years but eventually it will be in every AD's case for list price.
It's not about it being a bad watch, but the frenzy is the very definition of overrating.

Agreed. I grant that others are cuckoo for the watch, but I've never been able to see it.

I agree.. the Sub. I guess I march to a different beat, but whenever I hear "iconic" I get the sense that it makes less impact as to the features of the item itself since history and other emotional factors seem to drive the reasons for ownership.

Not saying that Subs aren't great watches though. I'd be a fool to suggest such an idea.

Yep. I have two Rolex and a Tudor. All three have black faces and white numbers or batons. Nothing is more classic or READABLE. I also have a Sinn 656 and a collection of old WWII aircraft clocks.

None are “overrated”, several are overhyped and trendy.

This! I believe every Rolex serves a purpose and is beautiful in it's own right. It's when they're being offered at almost twice MSRP, and people are paying that, that I start scratching my head. I'll take the cheaper one with gold.

To each their own though IMHO.

Overpriced - Sure.
Overrated - Naaaaah!

PM watches sell for such a premium over SS models that I cannot get my mind around it. *Some* premium is expected as the watch contains more valuable material. But considering the amount of PM in a watch the premium is crazy. A WG BLRO retails for triple the price of the new SS BLRO. Or more. There is not $20,000 worth of gold in the PM BLRO.

Unfortunately I find no Rolex overrated. They all serve a function with style and elegance. Especially the daytona...here is why;

I have been experimenting with the chronograph watch engines for last 10 years, one versatile and broadly used mechanisms I have had a lot of experience with is the valjoux 775x engine and its variants. I have also only once had the privilege of the zenith el premerio (valjoux 72) Daytona movement . When I finally read articles about the daytona 4310 and saw in the flesh , was totally awed. It is a feat of engineering for the price, shudder free operation, efficient functionality, parachrom Hairspring , and accuracy of +/-2 s/day from a functioning chronograph!... my opinion this is by far underrated. Then you have the milgauss, amazing feat of engineering, unaffected my any sort magnetism...

I am surprised people mentioning the daytona, seems its terribly unappreciated especially because of its very well engineered mechanism...shame

Only Rolex that is over rated, TO ME, are the oyster flex ones, that cost almost as much as the same with the bracelets. Gold, no matter the color, is infinitely better than rubber, for that price
