Self Control

How does everyone in their own way and mind thoughts, perception and emotions control themselves...in regards in not letting other people bother them, what is being said, what is being done to them etc...

I know life is short to care...but how does one deal with the ups and downs of life...of course drugs and alcohol are not an option...

It gets easier the older (and more mature) you get.

I do weight training/bodybuilding.

If someone bothers me just one time I never go around them ever again but no one I know personally bothers me. Strangers; if they bother me I walk the other way.

Good point. The older I get, the less I give a sh** and the less things matter. Of course, the corollary is that I matter less, as well.

Don't sweat the small stuff--in the end it makes no difference--keep your focus on things that matter!!

Which "game" is that?

I struggle with this as well. I get annoyed very easily at the little things. Oddly, the big things that happen to me don't phase me as much and actually focus me more intently. On the other hand, little things can completely throw me off.

As I know I don't handle certain things very well and I am not very good at office politics, for example, I just try and be myself and follow the Golden Rule as best I can. I still need a lot of work though I guess (at least that's what my wife tells me...).

Why don't you give us an example or a scenario of what's bothering you and we'll tell you how we'd handle it.

I used to be much more mellow. Now the stress of earning less, having a tougher time gets me going and I worry more. I need a positive change.

I just had flashbacks of watching that movie with Robert De Niro (Analyze That) where he tells him to "hit a pillow" to get his emotions under control . . lol

My Dad taught me at a young age to have "Thick skin and dirty ears". Been a pharmacist for 24 years, and that advice helps me on a daily basis.

Nothing bothers me & I don't hear (or listen) to half of it.

Try it, and don't sweat the small stuff.

Perfect!

But it still helps sometimes to think to myself, "they're the one with the problem, not me." And if the other person is intent on trying to rile you up, the best thing you can do is not react. Don't give them that satisfaction.

The only thing that you have total control over is how you react to things going on around you, what you think, and the things that you do and say. Always take the high road, and have no regrets. You can't control what other people do, you can't control what they think, you can't always fix things when you get dealt a shi**y hand, but you can always control yourself. I couldn't care less about so many things that many people think are so important. I just let it all go, do my thing, and do it well. My focus is always on personal integrity, my family, and my retirement, that's what matters long term.
The only thing that really gets me riled up is mismanagement and/or poor communication at work in life and death situations, particularly when people who should know better lose situational awareness. Fortunately that doesn't happen that often. I have a lot of trouble dealing with those that I know lack integrity, weak hypocrites, etc. I tend to avoid them like the plague.
