Real or fake

Hi all,

I was recently given a watch as a gift and was hoping someone may be able to tell me whether it is real or fake. Unfortunately it has come without proper documentation. It's been taken to a jeweller who has said it is genuine, I have also done some research and have found the hallmarks such as the crown etched in to the glass at the 6 o'clock mark on the glass, plain back, serial number and model number behind the watch strap.

What has made me have doubts though is the model number behind the strap is 116622 which as far as I can tell relates to a yachtmaster whereas this is a yachtmaster 2. I also couldn't find this particular model with a black face, only white.

Anyway, I have posted some pictures and would be grateful for your much more experienced eyes and opinions.

Cheers.

I'm not seeing any pictures, however, based on your description I'd say you have a fake watch!
There are no black dialed YMII, or YM. Except for a Tahitian mother of pearl dial on the YM. The model number you have is a YM, and not a YMII that you said it is...

Hi All,

I'm a new watch owner having been given a Rolex Yacht-Master II by my father.
The watch was given to him previous to that and unfortunately has no documentation or box. We originally thought it was probably fake but the watch was taken to a jeweller who told us it was real. I've then done some research since it was given to me and had some confusing information.

The watch has all the signs that it may be real, the crown etched in to the glass, plain back, serial number and model number on the edge behind the strap.

The confusing part for me is that the model number behind the strap is 116622, which a quick google search revealed was for a Rolex Yacht-Master, not the Yacht-Master II.

I have posted some pictures for you to take a look at. Being a novice it all looks pretty good to me, but your more trained eyes may be able to spot any flaws if it is potentially a fake?

Any thoughts and opinions would be greatfully received.

Cheers.

The balls at the tips of the clasp crown are dis-proportionally large. Letter spacing on bezel is all wrong.
I fear the worst...

Sorry but that YMII is a cheap replica.

The YMII does not even come in that dial colour. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news. Below are the only colour combinations and metals that a genuine YMII comes in.

Holy thread hijack by the way !

Well, that's a hidden Rolex sign you DON'T want to find on your Rolex.

Underside of the case is clearly marked incorrectly for a PM watch.

He should sell it to the jeweler that said it's real.

Yeah, do that!

Go back and tell you want to exchange for something else. Make sure you walk out of there either with cash or merchandise.

Your father needs to find a new jeweler fast.

Subdial also is marked like a calendar instead of seconds.

You should just throw that at your jeweler.

Shame...

Now that we have a uniform thread all in one place, and not spread over a different members thread with his very own question, your watch is a complete fake as I posted in post 2 of this thread (before you posted pics), and is worth nothing. The so called jeweller you took it too also knows nothing of Rolex, and you should avoid him in the future...

I do think though you already knew this. How many "Friends" are going to gift a 30k plus watch in reality?!

Well, in fairness it is probably a real watch. Sadly, just not a real Rolex.
