Photography: The Official TRF Share and Tell Thread

For all your shutterbugs out there - I’m starting a running thread in hopes we can share and tell about our work as well as learn new techniques.

It would be awesome to see daily or even weekly updates from members who are out there shooting and wanting to share their work for learnings, feedback and inspiration. I'll be posting time-to-time to keep it going.

Post any genre of photography you want (within the TRF guidelines!).

Suggestion resolution and image size:

Resolution: (width; landscape or portrait) 850 pixels
File Size: Web ready, under 290K

I’ll start the thread off:

Recently picked up a compact digital - having a blast with it. Still learning to dial it in. Brought it to work on Friday; we went bowling for a few hours before day’s end.

These shots are aiming to emulate that “snapshot” look-and-feel, hence some of the odd framing, accidental surprises, and general style of the shots. The art is hidding in the images.

I did a lot of funky post work to these - cross processing, color desaturation, and some other goodies.

A few shots form our Safari last September... I have a passion for photography but did not own a newer digital camera. So before our trip, 2-weeks before, I bought a new camera. Sony NEX-5N mirrorless digital camera and several lenses. I am very pleased with the technology and I plan to work with the camera more as I have not taken any pictures with it since we returned from Safari.

I hope you get to one day! We are planning to go back next year. Being on Safari is a life altering experience.

A few shots of The Taj Mahal taken with a Lumix 10 mega pixel camera. Not as clear as the much higher mega pixel point and shoot cameras being sold today.

I tend to do travel and landscape stuff. Here are a couple from my last trip and a more recent local one.

First from Copenhagen. Sony A33 Sony 50mm
DSC02980.jpg

Then from Iceland. Sony A33 Sony 50mm
DSC02959.jpg

This little guy I spotted on a walk around Vancouver. Canon 5D MKIII Voigtlander 40mm.
_Z3A1026.jpg

I use my 5D exclusively now and I process my photos using Capture One 8. Great piece of software.

Great work. Absolutely love the selective focus shot of the snail. The lighthouse is a superb example of the zone system.

The 5D is an amazing camera. Love that your using the Voigtlander lens. They're fantastic performers. I had a Voigtlander Bessa R2 for quite a while and regret selling it many years ago.

I've never used Capture One 8. Is that exclusive for Canon or a standalone application?

I love the Voigtlander lenses. I plan on getting the 28mm before I go on another trip. I prefer manual focus and even changed my 5D to a split prism focus screen.

Capture One 8 is from the company Phase One . They make medium format cameras and digital backs, along with their software. They have a long list of supported cameras.

Good choice on the Leica btw congrats

Cool idea and some great contributions so far. I photograph almost exclusively wildlife with a concentration on birds of prey although I recently bought a wide angle lens with thoughts of branching out a little into some landscape stuff. I do minimal processing and only have the basic program that Canon provides so no Lightroom or Photoshop. A few from me.

Thank you Flavio!

I should have mentioned these were all taken with a Canon 1D Mark IV and 500mm lens with and without a 1.4 extender except the waterfall which was taken with the Canon 100-400mm with a 9 stop ND filter.

Thanks bro. I'm one of those who are very late adopters. some of my best trips like poland, latvia, estonia, romania, russia (first visits) were made using an old camera with black and white films inside so I can't share. digital cameras were available since the late nineties but I refused to use them until 2004 (partially). Even nowadays my camera is digital but a shitty one. I need to buy a decent camera like you did my friend. This is me on my last trip.

Haven't shot anything in ages. It's been hard to motivate myself since I usually take pics when I travel and haven't been on a trip in 2 years. A thread like this gives me the itch to dust off the cameras and take them for a spin. Keep the pics coming!

Haha, love that! Should I bring my camera or luggage?

Flavio, it would be a dream for me to visit those countries and shoot street in B&W. There's such a, back-in-time social and infrastructure richness there, for emotive work. I used to shoot exclusively inB&W until just this week. I shot B&W for so long I didn't see in color anymore.

Honestly, I didn't transition to digital until 2008. In my mind, film still produces the best results, but the cost alone, the time to develop and post, the archiving, etc., was just too taxing. In 2008, I felt the film to digital inflection point transpired, especially with full-frame digital sensors, so I was ready to adopt. But I also adopted very late.

I was in love with shooting instant B&W "pack film" for a few years which can produce some really great emotional results, had an amazing NPC 195, and there's nothing more exciting than taking that shot, pulling the film, and after a few minutes, seeing the results. So damn magical.

Here's a shot (scanned, not the best quality either since it's copied from a low-res source), of some work I did in the Bart Station here in San Francisco. My thing was lots and lots of grain. Fast film was pretty much all I used.

Wow. You got talent my friend. That's a wonderful shot. Your latest pics from India are also truly amazing. I recently discovered that I could take a digital pic of my old pictures and it would have a decent result. Maybe I'll try that.

Great pics everyone! Any tips for a new person learning how to shoot in manual mode? I have my underwater setup started and am reading all I can and shooting on land with it. I am playing with different combinations of aperture, ISO, shutter speed and strobe power. I am having trouble knowing which to adjust when. Any tips other than keep practicing?
