Getting a new Puppy!!!

I am really excited right now so I just want to share the good news with you guys. :) I am finally getting a puppy. He's a golden retriever and he will be joining us shortly. I have always wanted a dog and I am finally getting one, I feel really happy. We decided to name him comet after the dog in full house since our family loves watching the show. My wife and I don't really have any experience taking care of dogs so we are doing a lot of research right now. I found a couple of blogs ( http://www.sleepwellsecurity.ca/blog...-new-pet-safe/ , https://animalso.com/breeds/golden-retriever/ ) but I want to know more from people who actually has a golden retriever at home. I know that they are great with kids and they shed a lot but that it not a problem at all. I would like to know more about them, their habits and the shots I should be getting for the dog. TIA for now.

Tons of books out there.

Best bet is too pick one up as the information is far greater than can be covered here.

Good luck. It's a lot more work than most people realize. But it's worth it, and then some.

Congratulations on the new arrival. Plenty of pictures please.

My boy Henry is the first dog I have owned (my mum is afraid of dogs from a bad childhood experience so I didn't have the chance when I was growing up). He came to us as a retired working gundog which was an easy-ish way to break me in. My only regret is that I didn't get to know him as a puppy.

Here he is doing what I call sandwich face i.e. "Dad, you're eating a sandwich. Can I have some? PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE!"

We have never owned a Golden but did own a Lab and it was the best dog ever. Our friends have a Golden and their temperament seems very similar to that of a Lab. I hope you've done some research on the traits of the breed so you know what you are getting yourself into. Overall I would think it's a good breed for a new pet owner. One thing to keep in mind is that your getting a puppy and you will be in for 2 years of hell before you get the dog you want! People that have never had dogs seem to not really understand that puppies are like kids and they will NOT do exactly what you want them to do....they require training and time. As for the vet requirements, find a good local vet and they will tell you what the dog needs. Do NOT try and save money by not going to the vet as it will cost you more in the end.

Goldens are great! Their good natured temperament is fantastic and perfect for children. You couldn't anger a golden if you tried.

Goldens are a great breed. But they are very active and need to be "ran" like daily. Tons of information out there on good breeders and best practices. There is a golden retriever forum that is very useful for research.

I have owned a golden in the past and was looking to buy one last summer. Did a bunch of research.
Wife wanted an Australian Shepard. We bought an Australian Shepard.
Plan to add a Golden when our Dachshund passes.

Great to hear. Love goldens! My family (parents) have had three over the years. They're incredibly good dogs and are very smart and affectionate. Agree with others, read some books. Puppies need schedules, but they'll pick up routines fairly quickly.
Have fun and look out for those sharp puppy teeth

I have never met a bad golden retriever. Only badly trained ones. Fortunately, they are so eager to please they take t training really well.

I highly recommend the Monks of New Skete training method. It worked amazingly well for my two lab mutts.

My two boys. Proof in one picture they are great with kids. Enjoy the ride, puppies are a little crazy, but I promise they get better!

Goldens and labs put on weight VERY easily. You have to make sure you keep the pup active. In addition to being healthy, active dogs also behave much better. It is much easier to train a dog after a long walk than it is when they just wake up.
