5235r vs 5524r

Hi,

Debating between these 2 models which i managed to try some time back (hope I can find one of them soon). I was enamored with the 5524r but trying the 5235r on really makes me doubt as I love the fact that it's a different Patek, from the movement to the overall style.

I know I should buy the one I prefer, but it is quite hard indeed to make a decision so perhaps others who had the same dilemma could chime in.

Interesting wrist shots. The 5235 is supposed to be smaller diameter at 40.5mm vs 5524 at 42mm, but they look the same relative to the size of your wrist.

I personally like the 5235 because of the unique regulator dial. The 5524 looks too much like an IWC to me…no disrespect to IWC, but if I am to buy a Patek, it has to be special enough for me.

Funny you say that, I actually have shot with my mark XVIII next to these two, and felt the exact same way as you..

I vote for the 5524... Amazing daily wearer with a very useful travel time complication, great lume.

5235R between the two.

If I wanted to get a Patek pilot watch I would pick up a 5522A as I prefer its clean and simple looks over the busy 5524R. Also not into GMT or travel time watches in general. Would rather get a worldtimer instead.

For the R model, I would go with the 5235R.

If it was G, I would be tempted with 5524.

I like both but maybe I prefer the 5524 a bit more - like the travel time complication and casual look - I would go for G version though

If the travel time complication isn’t important than you should think hard about the 5524. It is a core aspect of that watch. I love the complication, which is what drew me to it. I can agree on many of the pilot comparisons (but not necessarily that it isn’t patek), but it’s the travel time complication that really sets it apart.

I’m not into the regulator look so wont opine on that aspect. Good luck.

I like the thinness of the 5235R, but the dual time complication of 5224R.
If the 5524R could be a thinner and it would be just perfect.
So I would pick the 5235R. Looks stunning in the metal.

These are two of my favorite Patek timepieces at this price point. With that said, I would (and did) choose the 5235r. Everyday of the week and twice on Sunday. Far more interesting and unique timepiece. The 40.5mm x 10mm case of the 5235 is more wearable than the 42mm 5524. And if it comes down to the movements, it’s not even close. The standard 324 base movement that’s in the 5524 isn’t in the same stratosphere as the 31-260 Advanced Research micro-rotor caliber that was designed specifically for the 5235.

The 5235r is a true watch collectors timepiece, imho.

This has been repeated often but I really can't tell.

It has some passing resemblance to the zenith pilot, mostly because of the font of the 12, similar coloured dial, the strap and hands.

I have the 5524G and my wife the 7234A and we both love it. It's a really good interpretation of the pilot watch.

For those of you that have seen 5235 in g and r, why do you prefer the r? To me white gold seems like safer watch to wear as far as not drawing attention to the wrist by a non-WIS and the color combo of the 5235g looks so nice in photos. I love rose gold but feel self conscious wearing it out and about.

For me, the 5235g dial is a little too “cold”. The blue touches on the dial are nice. But overall, for such a beautiful and unique timepiece, the g is a slightly bland. The two-tone dial on the r is just stunning. It works extremely well with the rose gold case. Before the r came out, I was contemplating the g, but never pulled the trigger. When the r came out, I was sold and purchased it.

Conversely with the 5524, I’m the opposite and prefer the g to the r.

I love both of these models and for a while I was debating between the two also. I ended up just very recently choosing the 5235r

Overall I think it’s a little more interesting. But really they’re both fantastic watches.

I feel the 5235r really stands out for being different than anything else - very interesting piece and beautiful wrist shots! I think I will go for it - will hopefully be available in April!

Go for the 5235. Just bought a G, which should be with me within a week.

5235R is quite simply one of the most beautiful and under-appreciated watches in the Patek range. Loads of history to it, very different and also not too 'out there'. Wouldn't be surprised if this is one of those watches that in 10 years time people bang their heads wondering why they didn't buy one whilst also realising that then then can't afford one.

5524R is also glorious, plenty of history, easy to get hold of and timeless. It also wears smaller than a 42mm on the wrist.

Why not buy both?

From pictures, I like 5235 a little bit more as it looks more like a Patek to me relatively speaking.

But I must say I have once seen a 7234R on a wrist with a glossy dark brown alligator strap. That piece looks stunning possibly due to the smaller case size (what I prefer) and the darker strap that makes it more dressy and in a way, more Patek to me.

The 5235 is a philosophy on its own, very focused on accuracy (like the 5650G butin another way).

It is the only model with the Pulsomax escapement (escape wheel and anchor) aside of the 5550P Advanced Research. It pairs with what a Regulator is about (like Chronometre de Marine in a certain way).

And it has the gorgeous 31-260.

The 5524R is very modern for Patek but wears very well in today's aesthetical context (modern and classic at the same time). The numerals caraftmanship and holding one show excellent finishing (on the contrary to pictures).

It is really down to whether you prefer to focus on mechanical aspects (5235) or lifestyle (5524).

One piece of advice: take your time and imagine yourself wearing them during the day. I know it helps me choosing.

Having the same struggle as OP myself, but I am leaning towards the 5235R after seeing it in person yesterday.

I don't have an annual calendar PP in my collection yet, also the movement is simply unique and beautiful.

Wonder how it wears as a daily.
