I am considering buying my first Patek Philippe. I like the vintage ones best and was wondering which model would hold its value best?

Depends on what price range you are talking about and your definition of vintage.

For a basic watch I would suggest a model with the 12-600at movement. It's a classic.
Ref 2551,2552 for example.

I would never buy any vintage or modern piece for " holding value"

You wil see what I mean when you want to sell or trade

Buy what grabs you and you will enjoy wearing

There is a beautiful ref 2552 for sale at the moment on one of the trading sites.

I love this piece but would certainly never buy for investment potential

As a vintage PP collector, buy what you love. Also buy the VERY best condition you possible can. Condition is everything in these old watches.

Start small and work your way up the ladder. Perhaps with a nice manual, then to an Automatic...

Agreed, yet remember the small cases mean it needs to be something extra special. Think many complications, enamel dial, etc... with original box and original papers is best. As for holding/gaining in value, my apologies yet the crystal ball is a bit hazy.

For sports watch the 3700. Then it’s a toss up for the Calatrava line as to which you like. I like the 96 and 570. And you should buy steel if you want value I guess.

Hello and congratulations.

Vintage Patek I believe is one of the most rewarding experiences to be had in watch collecting. I would offer this input to your question; "buy the seller". The seller will be accountable for the quality and condition and will ask you the classic "needs/desires" that will narrow your search.

I wasted a lot of money on bad vintage a a great deal of time on vintage that did not end up "speaking to me" in my search for quality.

Ultimately the best for me was to just trade and save up for the 1463 with Breguet numerals.

Your path may lead to you the "internet favorites" or something largely unloved but a great entry point on price and function: 575's.

so many to chose from, certainly depends on your budget and remember to wear sparingly to keep its condition as pristine as possible
