15400st Silver or VC 4500v blue?

Hello everyone. It is good to be back after a loooong while.

Am currently considering either of these 2 pieces: AP RO 15400 steel in silver, or the 3rd gen VC 4500v in blue (date only). I have a 6.5 flat wrist so either one does not look oversized. I have tried both. Price is about the same new.

Currently, I have a PAM104, Sea Dweller from 2007 (do not know the series), Pepsi GMT II (2004 i think) and the just released Santos de Cartier SS large.

Am impartial to both (leaning a tad bit more on the 15400) but thought I would check what you think about these two. Which one is more iconic? More versatile? Which one will be a better addition to my little collection (planning to let go of the 104). Which one will hold its value more? What about service/maintenance?

Thank you in advance!

The VC is a nice watch but nowhere near as nice as the AP imo.

Thanks. Also thought about the chrono but in the end decided that since I do not really use the chrono feature (and it is more expensive) am back to the base models. I like that the VC has the quick change strap but am also concerned about holding value.

I had to decide between these two models and although I loved the quick change and addional straps I ended up going with the AP! Very happy with my choice!

AP for sure in this case. I prefer the blue dial but the silver is definitely easier to acquire and is beautiful ... I love the way the dial plays with the light.

The VCO blue dial is particularly nice but I'd go for the RO overall.

Thank you everyone! The blue RO is difficult to come by and if at all, it comes with a premium. In any case, I like the silver dial although admittedly I have not seen the blue in person. But the blue VC is very nice.

Am more convinved now that the RO is a better choice for me. I am on waitlist with an AD (VC readily available). But I found a reliable gray market dealer who has the RO silver at 13% off retail. It is supposedly BNIB purchased at an AD overseas in Feb. In this case, I can still register for the additional 3 yrs under my name, right? I believe the warranty is dated by the original AD. My only concern is not being able to get the warranty as I have read some threads saying that certain brands will only honor if i pirchase from an AD? Is this true for AP? What do I have to look out for (or ask) to make sure I get the warranty?

Thanks again

Full retail for a steel 15400 is pretty much market right now. I'd go for it.

Both great choices - think the RO is little more iconic, but I do like that VC offers multiple looks with the strap. Personally have the 15400 in white, so you know where I land.

AD offers at least 10% but you need to fall in line for it and the sales person said it may take a few mos. My other option is the non-AD shop with a store front. Gray (?). BNIB from an overseas AD dated Feb 2018. 13% off retail. Just worried about not being able to get warranty. Any tips on what I should be checking? Thank you.

Tried this on at an AD today .... what a stunning watch! Probably the most beautiful blue dial I’ve ever seen, and it has turquoise highlights depending on how the light hits it. VC uses some special laquer process. Really beautiful. It’s 41mm, and I actually wish it was 39mm, because it’s got a great vintage vibe. Now, you gotta love blue, of course.

So, getting back to the original question on this thread, I’ll go against the grain and vote VC. (And yes, I’ve tried on an RO. Eh.)

Iconic? RO. Versatile? Overseas ... 3 straps. Collection? Your call. Hold value? RO. Service? Same.

Man, I must be missing something with the AP. Does nothing for me.

I also tried this on today (I’m looking for a cool non-Rolex), and fortunately for my bank account, I didn’t like it at all. I know they also make a blue/silver dial in this model, which looks nice in photos, but I could never get used to that odd angled case and those little screws on the bezel. Also just looked too darn big. Great quality, of course, but from a design standpoint, I just don’t get it.

It looks really good on your wrist, perfect fit. I’m a big fan of the panda dial Royal Oak, especially the dial you’re wearing. Sorry you didn’t like it.

That “odd angled case” and “those little screws on the bezel” are all part of the Gérald Genta design. I totally get it and love it I’m sorry that you didn’t like it, but at least you got to try it on and get it out of your system.

I agree, fits you well. Its so funny hearing from people what they find to be a "nice" design. For me Rolex is pretty boring, nothing really to it. AP, has character, thought, elements, contrast as well as many other features and thats what I appreciate about the AP and the design.

Oh and for this thread, tough call because I do love the VC but based on price and holding value I would start with AP!
