765 AVI for “R” 1016 Good deal swap?
Hi guys.. So I recently acquired an amazing piece - A 1964/5 Breitling 765 AVI aka “Raquel Welch” in stunning unpolished condition..The dial patina is fall-in-love-with glorious (although very hard to convey in photos..).. I’ve been offered a rather nice “R” serial 1016 Explorer.. In good condition but no box or docs..As a straight swap.. Good deal or not?

Your Breitling is worth $15 - 17k. The Explorer?

The Breitling is a beauty at 41mm.
Although the 1016 "R" is also highly desirable it is 36mm and without box and papers I'd pass. The chronograph panda dial Breitling is superior to me in terms of collectability.

If the economics make sense (I don’t know what you paid for the breitling) I would 100% trade, especially if you don’t have any explorers. The two BEST explorers imo are the 6610 and the 1016 R. Pretty much anything between the 6610 and 1016 R I find bleh, unless it’s tropical or tiffany stamped. Could also care less about box and papers.

And if it's horological value, the answer above still applies. It's not as though you're choosing the finest Movado or finest Zodiac vs. a decent Rolex. You're choosing between a collector's Breitling and a mid-tier collector's Rolex. If the Explorer came with box and papers maybe it'd be a closer choice, but not here.

Much harder to find the Breitling -- I'd keep that..
Love the 1016 (i have two) but with patience not that hard to find great examples -- i passed on a Yachting a few years ago and still regret it...

Wow, not what I was expecting answer-wise from the ROLEX forum..! Yeah, the Breitling is not going to be straight-swapped with the 1016..
Thank you for your positive input guys, check out the pics! https://ibb.co/fX9h9qS https://ibb.co/x1N6ZYc https://ibb.co/V3L6bjX |

it make only sense if you - personally - prefer the 1016 ! No matter what the others are saying. Which one would make you happier to wear?!

The Breitling is so much more interesting.
1016's are having a moment in the sun, but I find them too small and boring. |
