I was wondering if it makes a difference if having papers for a new Panerai is important?

When I traded in my Breitling a few months back the dealer (one here on TRF) taking the trade wasn't concerned at all.

Any thoughts?

If you bought from an AD and don't plan to sell, not a big deal. But having papers is important for confirmation of authenticity and resale. I only look for full box/papers when I buy pre owned. You'd have to discount significantly for someone to buy without papers if with papers is only a little more.

Unless it comes from a personal friend / Paneristi I've known for some time, I wouldn't even consider buying a ETA-powered PAM w/o papers. the replicas out there are scary good and aside from very few tell-tale signs, indistinguishable from the real deal.

Pre-Vs... 10x even more important because well, they cost 10x more...

As for PAMs with in-house mvmts... I just don't care to buy a watch worth $7K or more w/o box & papers... but that's just me.

I thought there were serious people in this forum.
To the guy asking that rhetorical question, it is VERY IMPORTANT to have the watch papers. there are a lot of reasons why to have them.
I.e. If the watch was stolen, its damage, for authenticity, for resale etc..

This is nonsense. Having papers for any watch does not prove it has not been stolen or that it is authentic.
It cracks me up that people feel counterfeiters can create a fake watch, but not fake paperwork.

Some people like to have papers to make it a "complete set". It does nothing more....
Personally, I don't care because I can't wear papers. I would rather spend less on the watch and not have papers. Same watch, less money

That a really good point that I would make too. I think there are some timepieces which may be collection grade purchase where an enthusiast who appreciates having the complete set would insist on having everything. Papers for Panerai watches tend to be more important on modified movements however I've seen fake papers and watches.

I think an interesting comparison would be to look at Rolex, which i can only assume that at least 25% or more of all the owners out there do not have a complete set since it is the highest resold watch on the market. Yet when people buy Rolex from jewelers(AD) they really don't mind because they are buying-in to luxury where as maybe for Panerai being more of a enthusiast watch, those buyers look for the details as a hobby.
