Is there a good reason not to buy an OLED 4K TV?

I'm buying a new TV this weekend and have reviewed the recent 4K threads here. It's looking like OLED is the way to go.

I'll be in the 55 inch class and online reviews are pointing at the LG B6P as the most cost effective OLED available in this size. Best Buy here in Fayetteville has them for less than $2000.

I won't be doing home theater. This will be Netflix for the missus and sports for me.

All suggestions and recommendations are welcome.

Not to me. But I'd go 70 inch plus. Just my 2 cents.

I recently purchased a 65" . Cost was around $3,500. The picture quality is very good. The next size up is 75" and the cost is exponentially higher for some reason. Good luck.

I have had the 65" LG OLED for a year and a half or so now, and it looks fantastic. Blacks are significantly better than what LCD/led can offer which really shows in the picture quality. It was OLED that finally convinced me to upgrade from my Pioneer Elite plasma.

Thanks guys.

I'm going 55 due to the room size. We're only 10 feet away.

10 feet is actually pretty far for a 4k display, if it's under 75" at that distance you won't see the difference in resolution between 4k and 1080. When making the jump to 4k you also need to make a jump in screen size, just like when we moved from the old 30" or so CRT to the 50" high definition flat screens. Or sit closer.

OLED is totally worth it, so if you don't want a bigger TV maybe you can get a full HD OLED and save some money.

Like Constantine said, you won't be able to discern the difference between 4k and 1080p if you go too far back.

OLED is the way to go. I've always been a Sony fan but Samsung and others make great products.

Hey Abdullah......

I just bought a new piece of wall art (as I called it when explaining to my wife what was on the wall when she got home from work that day) and 65" was my choice. You'll be disappointed by 55" I think........unless your choice is a direct result of the usable space you have available.

I didnt't go OLED, but went 4K. I wasn't going to pay twice the price ($1,750 versus $3,500+) for OLED in my market anyways. That's my good reason you asked for.

The new 65" LG unit totally blows away my old 42" LG LCD TV in terms of picture quality............and we sit about 8' back from the screen without issue.

I agree with the others, go bigger than 55". We went with 75" and like the decision.

Same here I wanted a 75" oled but they are still wayyy too expensive. An immersive theatre experience trumps all else for me.

I went with a Sony 850D and am happy with it for the money.

Unfortunately the B6 isn't offered bigger than 65" which is the only reason I don't have one.

I went to Best Buy today. The LG B6 55 and 65 were wall mounted side by side. Picture is absolutely stunning in both 55 and 65. Color reproduction was far better than any other TV in the store. Though I liked the 65, I didn't like it $1500 more than the 55. The missus was with me and she actually preferred the 55. So... 55 it is.

I added a sound bar and some Sony BT wireless noise reducing headphones that missus wanted. Delivery and installation Thursday.

Sticker shock of the day - the missus is accustomed to buying big ticket items in the middle east (no sales tax). Sales tax here was around $300. I thought she would soil her drawers when she saw the sales tax on the receipt.

I'm still waiting to pony up and get a oled 4K myself.

Here is my problem.

I'll buy one for the living room.

Current Living room goes to man cave.

Current man cave goes to bed room.

Etc.

Then I will get jealous in man cave and have to get one for there..... so my one tv purchase may end up costing me 2-3 purchases. So I'm fighting the urge.

Let's get our priorities straight. That $1500 is 11% of a steel Sky Dweller.

Get the 65 inch.

4K Content is still limited but Netflix has the best, Amazon next, and a few 4K Blu Rays out there.

Did I mention you should reconsider getting the 65 inch?

Also have a look here and consider purchase through the Cincinnati retailer they recommend for less.

Found it.

Check out this link and the post from Cleveland Plasma. Many members on this forum recommend them. They supposedly have the best prices. I didn't purchase from them so I have no info other than most here recommend them. Do your due diligence but you might want to check them out.

4k means nothing if you have issues with your eyes.

I think that depends on how much issues you have. My eyes aren't getting any better but my 4K TV still looks friggin amazing!!

The resolution of the 4k LED TVs is truly amazing, but there is something about the older 1080p plasmas that I prefer. I have a Pioneer Elite plasma from 10+ years ago that I am going to hold onto until it dies on me.

My tiny cottage was built nearly 300 years ago. I do wish that the builders had, had the forethought to build a living room that would be big enough for a large screen TV, I don't think they actually thought about "future proofing" the house, they never built a garage either.

Many congratulations Abdullah, it will be fabulous.

I agree with you Wes, I had a 55" Pioneer Elite and it provided a great picture. Unfortunately it started going out on me so I had to switch.

Thanks Dave.

I think you're wrong on the builders future proofing your home 300 years ago. You have the perfect home for the immersive TV experience. Sit close to a large screen and become part of the story. For those who relish immersion, large screens that take up your whole field of view are the answer. Home IMAX, as it were.

I'm not really into the immersive experience anymore. I now just go for a rich color spectra, deepness of the blacks, and the overall feel of the reproduced image. This LG OLED pings on all of those. Much better than the LEDs. And standing 10 feet away, I could see a sharp difference between this 55 inch OLED and a 1080p.

As a disclaimer I do not have an OLED screen, However I have a couple 4k LED screens, a Samsung 8 Series plasma from 3 years ago, a Runco 1080p Plasma and a 1080p 3D Cinema projector.

From what I'm hearing from technitians is that OLED has a good refresh rates and quality of imagery. However it is plagued with issues such a dead pixels and shorter operating lifespan.

I personal agree with posts above that Plasma was/is great and if I could buy a 4k plasma I would do it over OLED at this point in technology.

What I'm having trouble with is when I'm paying several thousand dollars for a screen I want it to be the best piece of technology at the moment and also be very good for the next 5-6 years.

I see OLED at this moment in time a inexpensive way to market "innovation" while finding ways to price it much higher to make more money.

The reason they did away with plasma was because 1: the cost of making the screens were more than LED/LCD/OLED 2. The were heavier 3. It was getting a bad reputation by the majority.

I don't see that value right now with OLED as I believe the quality and longevity will improve and prices will drop significantly in the next 3 years.
That was why I have opted from traditional LED 4k units and enjoy them very much and still use my plasmas in the game room and family room since the viewing angles and refresh rate are as good as I've seen.

This doesn't mean I won't buy an OLED, however Im just waiting for some better technology that is NEW like Sony's 4k laser projectors

The LED 4K resolution is unreal. Watching a soccer game right now and you can see the blades of grass and rain drops coming down on the image.
