White gold

White gold keeps the brightness and color despite the years. My Datejust will soon be 30 years old and perfect. It does not yellow.

Rolex white gold isn’t rhodium plated so it is the same colour throughout.

Big fan of white gold. Use both a WG Day Date 40 and a WG/blue dial Daytona. Lovely watches ....although if I lived in a warm, sunny, country, I might be tempted by yellow gold. But not , living in the UK.

This is the key and applies mainly to Rolex White Gold. However it is a tad Yellowish if you look close enough or compare it side by side to stainless.

18 karat gold is used in watches, which is 75% gold. The rest is other metals, and is where other colours of gold come from. I believe Rolex white gold has a bunch of platinum in it.

And, yes, 18k isn't 100% gold, but it's already on the soft side. If it were 24k, it would be like wearing a slab of butter on your wrist. If you want the watch to be even a little functional, and not just pure jewelry, 18k is probably best. And it's not like the other 25% is dirt.

I've heard the main elements that are added to "bleach" the yellow gold color are palladium and nickel. I've also heard that's why it's more than yellow gold, cost wise.

I believe its a guarded secret on how they do it. Especially the percentages and process.

Nickel is dirt cheap, $12 a kilo. The expensive stuff is palladium at $36k a kilo (or $1.1K per ounce), compared to $28k a kilo for platinum and $39.5K a kilo for gold. Wonder how much palladium they put in that 25%...

OP, is that a WG datejust or are you referring to the fluted bezel?

I always wondered why Rolex charged more for WG than YG. Very interesting.

I know that this may sound like a daft question, but...

Is the full watch including all the bracelet, clasp etc WG, or just the watch itself?

To make gold "whiteish" it is alloyed with a white metal usually nickel but also manganese and palladium can be added. Most white gold, which is not plated with rhodium, looks grayish in color under bright light with yellow hints peaking through.

Did Rolex ever make an all white gold DJ. I do not believe so. There is a all yellow gold version, the current being the 116238. I preferred the engine turned steel bezel on a SS DJ to the current white gold bezels

I was assuming the bezel but there is a 1601 full WG Datejust that is very rare so it could be, perhaps the OP could confirm? Cheers
