Weird question - do you tell anyone?

I hope this group understands this question.

I’ve been able to secure some really sought after pieces from an authorized dealer over the last few years

Sometimes when I’m in groups with other watch enthusiasts I hear a lot of people complaining about the “unobtainium” and bitching about what I’ve always thought was an expected experience regarding waits, choices

Do you tell anyone you’ve gotten a Daytona, Batman etc. ? I don’t really like to flex but sometimes, but is it appropriate to say ‘maybe it’s just you?’

Some folks shout from the roof tops, others are buying/experiencing for themselves with no need to explain.

I fall in the second category, but sometimes stuff does sneak out on these pages.

Nothing inappropriate here, that I can see. Interesting question. Nothing is unobtainable, if you have enough money. For those of us that need ,or want to be more frugal, we need to play the AD games, and be patient. No flexing here. I waited over a year, to get my desired OP, and was happy to do so.

I only have a few friends into watches, and they know what I have and how I got them. I do see the frequent threads here whining about ADs and the difficulty of getting Rolex watches. I see the other side which at one time was the majority here, ADs who are selling watches at a record rate, and their happy customers who get them.

When I hear someone bragging about their hot pieces from an AD they are always wearing long pants. When I ask them to see their knees and they decline that’s when I know what they had to do…

Here's my easy five-step plan:

#1 Let others shine.

#2 Show my wife's Laine.

#3 This makes my wife smile.

#4 Happy wife...

#5 Happy life.

It’ll be fine, as long as we stay civil.

IRT the OP’s question, if they are enthusiasts and active collectors, they know the game. Wearing the hard to get pieces is enough, no need to flex. They know.

I'd keep quiet, but I wouldn't lie if asked directly about any watch purchase.

I've friends who also love watches. They likely think I'm obsessed but I do like to share. Here in particular when it comes to WRUW threads.

I downgraded from the batgirl and Starbucks to a black sub date. The guys at the club laughed me out of the building. The caddy with a black sub on even got a chuckle at my expense. I just wear long sleeves now.

I would simply keep my mouth shut.
But that's just me speaking from many years of experience and good advise passed down to me from my elders and superiors.

In life it's best for one to be silent and thought to be a dill, than to open ones mouth and remove all doubt.
Besides, nobody needs to know anything about anything unless it's of benefit. You will likely be placing yourself at a disadvantage.

Probably best to let it out on an anonymous internet forum where you are virtually unknown and shall remain that way should you choose

I am impressed with large, perfect vintage collections but a modern collection just takes time & $. I wouldn’t worry about it too much. The people that are impressed probably aren’t that into watches.

Here you are a small fish. There are guys who have been collecting watches for decades here. That’s impressive to me…

I get the OP’s question; recently I’ve had a couple people ask me about my new BLNR that are likely waiting for GMT’s/other in demand pieces from the same AD. I’ve wondered if it would be better to say I bought it grey rather than admit it’s from an AD and have to answer the wait time/spend history/ frequency of check in questions that have followed.

That’s why I love TRF; like minded collectors/watch enthusiasts who can share in the joys without the overt jealousy.

The 6-8 watch enthusiasts I hang out with are pretty good friends of mine. We share the moment we get a new piece so there’s no hint of flexing going on. If you’re hanging with strangers taking about watches I would tread lightly. Having said that usually one of the first questions you ask a fellow enthusiast is what’s in your collection..

I post and share my enthusiasm for my wrist watches here through pictures and responses to posts. I guess when it really comes down to it, just wearing a Rolex, any Rolex, is a flex in and of itself.
Outside of this forum, I have a friend of >50 years who is passionate about timepieces too. We discuss and share all the nitty gritty details about our pieces, how we acquired them, etc. Beyond that, I keep a low profile and only provide the barest of details if anyone remarks about what I'm wearing.

Exactly

Plus I gotta say, she chose some amazing designs (custom) and you can see many watchmaker and Rose Engine hours handcrafting her special piece. Happy wife....

variety is the spice of life. Do you not flex when you are out and about wearing a flashy rolex or other brand watch. I mean , some things are just hard to notice. Your posting on the pages of life when you are out in the wild. I remember the hostory of early cars, only being available in black. You want to show off your car, black black or....black. Thank God watches are different! (and cars too)

Nobody in my life cares one bit about watches. When I was considering one, I showed a gray market ad to an old coworker over chat and he was like "Ten grand? I don't get it at all, that would be the last thing I'd spend ten grand on." So when mine came in at the AD three weeks ago, I just didn't bother mentioning it as there was no point. It's pretty much the same with everyone else, nobody I know even wears a watch, whereas I have worn a watch every day for the last 25 years and would feel incomplete/naked/unprofessional without one.

And in public, I'm definitely not flashing. And no social media posts whatsoever. I bought my Rolex for me, not for anyone else.

There's a difference between sharing and showing off. Especially considering who your intended audience is.
