How I got into watches - and my first Seiko!
I've grown up watching my dad wear a TT Rolex DJ he received from his father, my grandfather. As a kid, he let me wear it occasionally for special occasions and it always made me feel like a hero - not because of its prestige as a Rolex but because I knew how much it meant to him. I will always associate the DJ with my family, particularly my dad and grandpa.
When I was 23, he and my mom wanted to mark a special occasion for me and gave me my own 36mm DJ with a banging blue dial. I loved that watch. I wore it almost everyday for about five years. It's in my wedding photos, family photos, holidays photos, etc.. etc.. You get the point. The watch was special to me. Unfortunately, however, somebody stole it around October of 2019. Pit. In. Stomach. Luckily the watch was insured and I was able to get another 36mm DJ with the same blue dial. In a strange way, my connection with the watch, finding its replacement, and the SS shortage in the Rolex market conspired together to spark my interest in watches. I learned more about the watch I lost, the history behind it, the movement inside, and I had to speak with several ADs and SAs before I found a suitable replacement. Although I lost the sentimental value of the original piece, I gained an appreciation for a world i didn't otherwise know existed - the world of watches and the community of people that inhabit it. Since that time, I've been reading this forum and I've learned so much from you all. Thanks for sharing all the insight. This is such a cool community. Today I unboxed my first solo purchase since replacing the DJ - the 2020 Seiko Alpinist pictured below. It's not luxury, but is rich in history and is super neat. I love that this is my first independent piece and it's likely to become my daily. I don't know why I felt compelled to share all this. I'm just super pumped to have found this community and the world of watches! Carry on, folks!! ;-) |

I was drooling over this exact watch yesterday at my AD. If I hadn't already picked something up while I was there it would have come home with me.

Great first piece and great story about your Datejust (not the stolen part but the part where you were able to acquire another one). Congrats!

Great story and a lovely watch! About the same for me. Joined the early part of last year with very specific objectives and have been completely drawn into the forum and the people who inhabit this space. I too really appreciate being a member of this community.

We’re super pumped to have you in the community! Sorry for the loss of your DJ. I know how it feels, my first ever mechanical watch was stolen after 15 years of ownership.
That Alpinist is awesome, congrats! I’m looking forward to seeing those in person soon. |

That's a very handsome watch. Great backstory, too.
