Removing stickers is standard procedure pretty much globally. Was the engraving offered at no additional cost? I would have gladly taken up on it if that was the case.

I don't believe this story. Sorry.

But to answer the question of if it is legal. It almost certainly is legal in most jurisdictions (although it would violate their agreement with Rolex). If they stipulate that the watch must be engraved as a condition of sale then you can either agree or decline to purchase. They own the product, and don't have to sell it. They can make any (legal) conditions they want - even if it means they go out of business in a week.

Call me crazy, but If they give me the watch for mrsp, they can engrave anything that they want into the caseback and I‘d not even blink.

I wonder if they engrave all those SS watches going out the back door to greys.

Everybody is complaining about engraving the back case and I agree this is ridiculous and absurd BUT if If you see it with a different perspective, I do not see badly that the AD is trying to avoid the resale of the watch. At the end that is what we all want, stop the grey market resale and someday be able to buy a piece without all the hassle of "waiting lists" like we used to do 5 years ago.

Seems, if true, this could have unintended consequences. Let’s suppose for a minute that every new Daytona, GMT, or other hot SS model gets a caseback engraving moving forward. Wouldn’t that simply drive the prices of “non-engraved” models even higher? Same way stickered models sell at a premium over “unworn but AD removed plastics”...also is an engraving really going to dissuade someone from buying a preowned watch they really want but can’t get from an AD? Just seems silly and kneejerk

If Rolex wants to dissuade flipping, simply allow AD’s to remove the profit opportunity from resellers by charging market rates rather than a MSRP that is way lower than market value

Just put a GPS tracking device in the watch and call the person every morning asking where they are to confirm it matches the GPS coordinates.

That or weld the clasp shut on the wrist or maybe put some sort of lock and key on the watches that only the AD has the key for.

I don’t know what to believe anymore but this story absolutely takes the prize. Completely bizarre. So, if this is true, I would absolutely contact Rolex in the form of a customer complaint letter. I would send a copy to the BBB. I would then contact a different AD with this story and tell them you would like to be a customer of their store in the future.

Good luck and enjoy the GMT...

He asked you to remove the watch so he could confiscate the stickers?

It certainly seems like a lot of GMTs are available at $15-$18k...

One of the conundrums of TRF. Most people say they’re anti flipping but when a dealer does something to prevent it they cry foul.
Why not do the same on a car then. Next time you buys a car and the dealer states they have to have their dealership name inscribed on the trunk just let them, you know since you're not going to get rid of it anyways.

OP, are you an employee of the AD? If so, this is common practice.

Any pics of said engravings by any of the posters that are in agreement with this purchase practice.

When sending it in for service to RSC, would they consider this engraved case back as modified and would they charge you to replace the case back with a standard one.
