“My AD told me upfront that if I am to buy any steel watch they will have to engrave the case back. I am fine with that as I don’t plan on flipping them.
They did indeed engrave the two watches I got this year”

What did you have them engrave into the case back? This “policy” is only for SS models? Crazy.

An ad I visited recently was getting ready to fedex a Daytona, unmolested and still in the coffin. All stickers intact. So I guess this policy is only spot enforced.

That AD must be one of one. Is it a new Rolex franchise? Im sure that in house rule won't fly for long.

I dislike grime enough so I would hate to have it engraved. It seems like the engraving would be a breeding ground for gunk.

Free engraving? What a bargain...

Ask them to do a Rolex Crown on each caseback!

Good you didn't listen to them, if they were serious about anti-flipping they would have told you before you paid or just done it already with their name on it or some random initials.

That may be the most absurd thing I’ve ever heard, there is no way an AD can tell you they have to engrave a watch that YOU paid for. I’d walk away and let them know you’ll be reporting them to Rolex, this is why Rolex is dropping ADs and going to Boutiques. Stupid hourly salespeople should not be allowed to sell luxury items. Absolutely ridiculous, here’s my $10,000 and sure go ahead and carve up my watch, just reading this makes me want to puke at some of these “dealers”

My AD removes stickers every time I purchase a watch from them. There was one particular time when I stopped by just to chat and my SA noticed that there were some stickers still on the piece I was currently wearing so he asked me to take off my watch and removed remaining stickers that weren't removed at the time of purchase. I was a bit offended but I got over it.

Stickers, I could care less. But engraving? What has the Rolex world come to?

First time I've ever heard of such a thing, although I'm admittedly not that up on current AD games. Weird.

Sigh. As long as the watch and warranty are in your name, you don't need the card. Just a proper I.D. to prove your identity.

Sticker removal is fairly common although it's a case by case decision. This one always makes me laugh because I always have the AD remove the stickers since I like to "wear it out" to enjoy immediately. Granted; if it's a gift I wouldn't appreciate presenting it w/out stickers. But, it's still a brand new, factory fresh watch: it's not like a watch missing the manual, box, etc. OTOH, if someone gifted me a Rolex, I wouldn't give a 'tinker's damn' if the stickers were removed.

This engraving request, this has come up before, is patently ridiculous. It's also unreasonable and probably something HQ would frown upon. (Although, who knows how they come up with some of their 'wackier' policies.)

Glad you didn't knuckle under, it personally I would have laughed in their face but commend them on having a sense of humor.

Engraving indeed.....

Stickers is common, engraving not. Good job “sticking” to your guns. Ridiculous tactic and if they are truly concerned with flipping, there has to be a better way.

Congrats on the selection, but shame about the inscription. I guess its to fight resellers, but some just prefer not to have an inscription even if they are keeping so that is unfortunate

I would ask them to inscribe it “B. S. D.” Then when they ask what that is, I will say “big swinging d....”

Lol

This comes up periodically. The majority here obviously doesn’t like it but RolexUSA could care less about one of their “independent authorized agents” sales policies.
One of the conundrums of TRF. Most people say they’re anti flipping but when a dealer does something to prevent it they cry foul.

You were offended?? If it were me, I'd have been sheepish and embarrassed, and would have thanked him sincerely.

Is this legal? Can the authorized Rolex store dictate to their customers what to do with the watch that you paid in full? Has anyone experienced the same scenario?
Yup, I experienced the same from my AD. They stated that this their new store policy and that this makes the watch “completely your own”
I have bought 3 rolexes from them and still have all of them. Still they would not allow it to me without my intials engraved in the back. My next watch i get feom them is a pepsi. So unfortunately it may have my engraved initials. But since i keep all my watches, im OK with it. But i really would prefer with the engravement.

Removing stickers is policy here in Australia too. I got everything else including warranty card on the spot. They also cited Rolex policy,
