Submariner vs Submariner Date

Would your choice on getting a submariner vs submariner date be influenced by the other watches you have? I would tend to lean more towards the Submariner Date because I have a Explorer I.

It’s good to have at least one watch with a date.

Nope. Where there is a choice, sans date and sans cyclops.

If you don’t have a watch with a date yet I would opt for a sub date as it will be very useful as a daily. However the clean aesthetic look of a sub no date is wonderful, but only to wear on rotation.

Best of luck with your decision.

I have both and wear the Sub much more often than the Sub Date. I guess that it seems more of an every day, anywhere type of watch.

I’d go with the Submariner. I prefer the GMT for the added complication

I went for Submariner, love the symmetry and clean uncluttered dial.

All of my other watches have date.

Sub date- Cyclops is an iconic part of this watch now since it was introduced long ago. If I were getting a dateless Rolex for the sake of having a simple, more symmetrical dial design it would definitely be the Explorer 1.

if i had known the submariner existed and not just the sub date which is ubiquitous in nyc, I might have bought the coolaid sooner. It would also possibly change how I looked at rolex in general.

I have a lot of watches, I have only one sub which is a no date, while I find it looks better I do miss the date I still look aT my watch for it. If you dont have a watch with a date I would get one with a date. But if you just want it to look good no date

Agreed. I was attempting to change it a little to see if it makes more sense to get a Sub date if you already have say an Explorer I in your collection.

I like the date, something I use often. There is nice symmetry to the no date, but I like the cyclops, it’s iconic.

i have the sub date, i love the cyclops. like the saying, better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

and you will always look at the date...

At this point, I will only get a watch with a date. I wear my watches and need that info! Maybe when I retire I can get a Sub since I won't care what day it is...

On the plus side, means I can save money by not getting a Daytona and go for the Tudor BB Chrono instead!

No date. The crystal stays much cleaner without the cyclops.

If you don't need a calendar every day, Sub without a date has a clean and proportionate dial. How you work based on plans, deadlines, implementations - the date is indicated. I personally ordered with the date (type of work), despite the fact that the latter appeals to me more aesthetically.

They can most definitely co-exist in a collection. They are both true classics. Which Rolex is fantastic about the homage modern references pay to the original renditions.

When I do wear Rolex - it’s usually a Daytona or a Submariner. I mean- I know what the date is — and it’s everywhere around me on my phone, computer, calendar etc. never understood the heavy reliance.

(And I prefer the flat crystal vs. the cyclops— and the ease of setting vs. the date ad I rotate - not that I don’t have references with...)

Balanced dial vs practicality of the date.

If you’re planning on getting a gmt later on. I’d go no date.

If you’re not planning on getting a gmt or planning on trying to get a daytona, then date

whichever you buy after a while you will start looking longingly at the other one. Its Rolex's greatest trap, closely followed by the dial colour of the Explorer 2. After that you start with jubilee or oyster on your DJ and so on, until eventually you're either broke or just buy all of them.
