Trading my 2013 Submariner 116610LN for...

...a 2016 Air King 116910.

Before I get bashed (maybe), hear me out. But at the same time, I would like your opinions too and give me a perspective from your views.

This is my first post, so hello everyone.

I currently have a Submariner 116610LN. I've owned it for 2 years now and I wear the watch whenever I can, almost daily. I love it for what it is, an iconic Rolex. However, I find it a little too flash and prefer something more understated.

Anyway, I'm a big fan of the latest Air King. I know it's not the favourite among most people but I like that it's different.

Things I like about the Air King:
- the coloured logo and second hand,
- more understated than the Submariner
- The design and link taken from Bloodhound SSC gauges
- It's quirky and fun
- Not as popular as the Submariner
- Potentially being discontinued as Bloodhound doesn't run the Rolex gauges anymore.

Would very much appreciate other aspects I may have not looked at and other opinions as to why I am making a bad choice (or a good choice), please don't make it personal though.

The 116900 was my first Rolex. It's different in a nice way. If it sings to you. ..get it. :)

Nothing wrong with wanting what you want, but, before you trade for it you’d be better off selling the Sub date and using the proceeds to buy your Airking. You’d have an extra $1500 in your pocket and the watch you want...

Love the King!

"I know it's not the favourite among most people but I like that it's different."

It always cracks me up when people say this about certain Rolex models. Every model is special and unique in its own way! Even the Leopard Daytona is awesome! I can see why you may want to trade. The maxi case is a bit larger and ceramic bezel is a bit flashy. The Air King looks like a fun watch to own.

Love the Air King, considering it as my 2nd. The price difference is a factor, you should get cash back in the trade AND I'm not sure I'd call it more understated, the dial more than makes up for the sub's bezel. Just my opinion. If you want understated the Exp I is the way to go. But again, I do love the AK, and see the appeal, as long as you get fair value.

Saw the AK recently in the metal and I liked it a lot more than in pics

Don’t know if I’d do the trade but I definitely agree with your reasoning. If you want to do it go for it!

Sub > AK in terms of cost/value/price. You should be able to come away from that trade with some cash in hand and a nice ,new to you, watch.

Go for it if you want it and enjoy it!

When it comes to watches, follow your heart. You will enjoy the hobby more that way. In this case, the air king clearly sings to you. I would however pick one up separately instead of trade what I already have.

Whatever makes you happy! I wouldn’t describe the sub LN as flashy but I guess you could argue it is moreso than the AK

If it sings to you then go for it :) IMHO the sub is nice, but not special. Beauty is in the eye of the holder.

I personally wouldn’t do that trade or move
but then again the AK doesn’t sing to me either.

If that’s what you want to do then do it but
make sure you won’t regret it later. Good luck.

Thanks all for your input. Much appreciated. It's all still in the balance very much so.

I think I will get a much better idea this Saturday when I go to the dealer. I may change my mind once I see it as I haven't actually seen one in the metal yet.

AK is a great piece on your wrist. I think you'll enjoy it. I wore mine for a year as a daily and loved it, only reason i let it go was for a new Expll at the AD. I didn't have the funds so i traded it in. If i could change only one thing about the AK I'd make the 5 an 05 to match the rest of the dial numbers. Great piece though, I have a 114060 and it dosen't get much wrist time anymore so thinking of moving it for something else as well.

Well, don't commit to anything until you try it on, spend some time with it and try to get oa sense of what owning it and wearing it every day will be like.

It's been said: "We only regret the things we *don't* do."

Good luck and keep us posted.

In a way Air King is flashy too.
Go for it if assuming you’re adding it.

My first Rolex was the AirKing. Flipped it for Sub date. Wouldn’t give up the Sub date but have to admit, to me the AirKing was more comfortable. Would love to pick up another one in the future

So i've decided not to go for it. I think looking at the bigger picture, a Submariner is always going to be a staple Rolex for a lifetime, a great tool watch regardless. The Air King would be nice to have as an addition for it's differences and unique styling. Many thanks all for your input!

what's with all the recent air king hype?

You'd better be getting some cash on top of the air king otherwise it's an unfair trade ... ah just saw your post that you didn't go for it a wise move imo

Oh boy, oh boy. Air King is great, but do not get rid of your SubC for an Air King plus a bit of change! That's sure to end in regret.

Either add the AK, or keep the sub.

Saw a guy who had an AK last holiday. He wore it everyday at the pool. Looked way nicer then I expected. It doesn't scream Rolex as loud as a Sub. So if that is what you like, since you state the Sub is too flashy, you're probably doing the right thing.

Your watch, your choice, your life. Do what pleases you and just make sure you end up with the AK and a decent wad of cash for your Sub Date.
