Need views on Balancing a Collection

Hello! Been lurking the forums for years and sure did learn a lot about watches. Now I have 6 fine pieces and still got the itch. But I’d like to keep the collection at 7-8 tops so maybe you guys can help me “balance” my collection:

1. JLC Polaris Automatic (No Date)
2. JLC Master Control Complete Calendar (blue dial, 2022 limited)
3. Rolex GMT Rootbeer
4. Rolex Submariner Starbucks
5. Rolex Daytona Panda
6. Vacheron Constantin FiftySix (date)

Generally I was thinking whether I was “Rolex heavy” and thus whether I should let go of the Rootbeer or Starbucks (since I got these “gray” I don’t have much attachment to them, unlike the others I got working with my AD which I’d never sell) to make way for some pieces. What I had in mind for next few months was to get one of these:

1. Patek Calatrava 5227
2. VC Overseas Dual Time
3. JLC Master Ultra-Thin Perpetual Calendar
4. Zenith Chronomaster Original
5. Rolex Daytona YG Oysterflex

Any thoughts?

- No need to let go of any pieces as long as the collection is balanced
- For Patek: Calatrava or go higher like 5270G Chrono?
- I’m willing to consider other watches (just don’t know which ones - please do recommend)
- I’m 36 in the tech industry so we’re casual-smart casual at work

Also looking into adding Tudors (Pelagos, Ranger and BB Chrono) as a side collection, good idea?

Your budget is quite wide if you’re willing to add either 5227 or 5270! Give me the 5270 in that instance.

Nice collection by the way and I’m all for unloading extra Rolex bought grey.

I would consider getting a Patek with some complications. It doesn’t have to be the almighty 5270 but perpetual calendar, chronograph or even some annual calendars like the 5205 are nice. Again if the budget is secondary the 5270 or my personally favorite the discontinued 5970 would be epic.

Oops 5270G. Lol I meant 5172G or I’ll bankrupt myself! Sorry about that.

To make up, here’s some watch porn and maybe we can round this out :)

Rolex Pros + Partner’s Tudor

Do you mean Patek 5170 or 5172 chronographs? The 5270 is a perpetual calendar chronograph which is at another level of collection.

If it is the 517x which you meant, I would highly recommend the blue dial 5172G which is very casual and with the gorgeous movement it will bring your collection to another level. But beware that this may be a rabbit hole which you are falling into.

With all due respect it does not sound like you know what you want.

Decide what you want to own and wear and go from there. I cannot recommend anything and some of the things you are looking at seem like duplication to me. Nothing wrong with getting what you like.

Thats totally true but I’m guessing we’ve all been through that phase haven’t we? If it were me, I’d get the whole list and probably will in due time.

Agreed on the my being susceptible to duplication which is why I’m considering whether I should let go of the Rootbeer or Starbucks. They got offered to me in short order of one another and ended up buying both.

But then if I could only afford one at a time I need to make a smart choice about what’s next :)

Hence I’m reaching out for opinions of more experienced collectors on what one would have (or should have) done in this situation.

Yup the 5172G in blue dial. Hmm I guess the question on my mind becomes is my collection mature and balanced enough before I take Patek on?

balance, smalance. Way over-rated concept. Buy and wear what you like. You already have a very nice (and diverse) collection.

There are members on this forum that have a box full of black divers and members that find the notion of a duplicate an atrocity against mankind.

All that said, while not on your list, how about a VC Chrono?

Buy what you like most. It doesn't matter what others think of your collection as taste is very subjective.

I would maybe look to add some higher horology, possibly a vintage piece. VC has some awesome vintage pieces that are truly one of a kind. Patek would also be a good move there.

As a small collector myself, I put a high value on diversity and uniqueness in my collection. I know I;ll never be able to get everything I want (who can?) so I feel the next best thing is to have pieces that have stood the test of time design wise and that offer something in terms of design that you cant get elsewhere. Thats what drives my interest in VC.

Also I wouldn't add a Tudor to your collection. It is too redundant with the sports/tool watches.

In that case 5172G is a great choice. It will be head and shoulders above the rest of the collection but there’s nothing wrong with that.

Never move your Sub/GMT/Daytona trio! By the way, that's a very diverse range of collection you got there......

I would add a perpetual calendar to your collection.

Current collection: 1) Rolex Submariner(116610LV), 2) Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional(311.30.42.30.01.006), 3) Rolex GMT-Master II(126710BLNR), 4) Breitling B01 Navitimer 43(AB0138211B1A1)

Thanks everyone! Looks like I need to let my AD know about my interest in the 5172G, probably a year or so of waiting :)

Meanwhile, I'll enjoy my collection and see if I snap up anything along the way.

Agreed. Will probably look into the JLC Master Ultra Thin for perpetual calendar; probably the one I can get at the sub $50k price range :P

You know what i’d do? Forget about the 5172 and instead add a 1955 CDV and a 5227 black dial. Perhaps sell the 56 or replace that with a blue dial 56 full calendar. Some brilliant additions without breaking the bank.
