I bought the watch from a local, very reputable, jewelry store/watch repair store that sells used Rolex watches. They told me that the watch appeared to be mostly original but also serviced with Rolex parts over the years (bezel in particular). I will pick up one of those rubber balls used to remove the case back and check inside. What should I look for other than confirming that the correct movement is in there? thanks.

The watch appears to have a nicely refinished case which is evidenced by the wear and rub marks between the lugs which would not be consistent with the current case condition. It is definitely not NOS or in "unworn, like new condition." As far as the case engravings between the lugs - I don't see any issues with the letters or numbers to indicate the case is fake or re-stamped.

Enjoy the Submariner.

Case defenitely laser/recut.
Personally I think engraving and the end-links marks are ok, I can see the proper vertical line and the number look consistent
Here's with my 1680 serial 5.71xxxx

Lesson number one:

Keep your endlinks properly adjusted.

Hard to believe these lugs are over 40 years old…

Welcome to the forum! Enjoy your vintage Sub!

If you want to open the caseback, I suggest you take it to the jeweler who sold it to you.

Polishing and changing the crowns etc. were all things Rolex routinely does during service, and people in last years typically didn’t worry about that.
