Is It Timeless?

Good Day All,

Simple question; how important is the timelessness of a watch/design in your purchase decision?

There are a range of factors we all consider in making watch purchases: brand, function, color, metal and a host of others. One which is important to me is whether the watch will hold up through time - in 20-years or more will this watch still be in style. That’s easy to answer for watches like the Sub, Calatrava or 39mm R.O. but not as easy for others, like a 43mm Chopard QP or really anything over 40mm, like a 5524.

I’d love to hear a range of thoughts on this as it seems almost paralyzing to me at times.

I definitely think a lot about timelessness. I feel like a fun part of the hobby is trying to predict what's really going to last; it's the *only* way to feel good about buying major $ pieces, since if you think it's a fad then it's not going to hold its value.

I own a 5524G, partially because I predict it lasts. I think it's underrated and long-term it becomes a Platonic form of a pilot's watch design. Could be wrong! But I've had it for >3 years and still love it.

But yes, when I'm evaluating a watch, I am def thinking about whether I think its design is going to hold up over time.

I think as my watch journey evolves my taste does as well.

Now, I tend to gravitate toward modern takes on classic references.

Some watches may be timeless, but human life isn’t. Buy what you love.

Super relevant to my collection aesthetic as well as most other things I put some effort into.

Great and balanced design is essential

I buy what I find aesthetically pleasing provided it’s comfortable, I have a strong draw to the brand and I can afford it.

If you have good taste your choices will prove timeless down the road. If not you’ll probably have actually acquired something collectible!

I consider the 911 timeless as the latest iteration still looks similar to the earliest generation, and both still look great today. There are some watches like the 911 such as those you mentioned which I think look good at almost every cross-sectional point in time. Comparatively, some avantgarde-looking watches today may date very quickly in the future. Without naming any specific watch brand or model, I will draw reference to Chris Bangle's E60 5 series and leave it there. I tend to avoid them.
