I noticed one of my customers had on a 16800 the other day. It is the first one I have seen. He said he bought it new in 1982 and it has never been serviced! He did say it was prone to lose a few minutes.

My Dad's 1979 Ref 1680, now mine. Sadly relumed with a service bezel. WTH do they replace perfectly good bezels and relume dials? So unnecessary.

Yup. Saw this last week on either Discovery or maybe history channel’s. Great show on Hitlers Subs off the Carolina Coast.

Who knew this thread existed… Amazing! Here is my vintage 5513 (passed down from my step grandma who bought it to dive with in the early 70s). As a bonus, spot my sub in a pile of foster kittens :)

Tried to get a shot of these two in the same light to show the difference between a matte dial Sub and a gilt dial, in terms of blackness. The matte is, essentially, a very dark grey, while the gilt gloss is truly black. And in real life the difference is striking.

Here's my -78 1680. I had the pip in the bezel replaced a few years ago with a SL one. I have thought about carefully drilling out the luminous compound and replace it with color matched paint to the hands and dial... Anyone done that?

Color-matched pearls of various shades are available for peanuts on eBay.

Yes, but all I looked at have the wrong shape. Hence, I would like to modify the one I got replaced by my RSC.

In 1971, on leave from warm spots like Khe Sanh a 5513 was in the PX for $90 while
a red 1680 was $175 on leave in Hong Kong. A later MACVSOG location in 1972 had one of our SF VN translators run out to leaving truck with a red 1680, he took it off and was asking $175 -almost new but not a full set. Now-guess which were bought...
now those WERE the days.http://20190124-192036
Currently working on a PCG gilt dialed 5512 from 1960.

Hodinkee :Reference Point- Rolex Submariner is an excellent treatment of the vintage Submariners. In fact, it is good enough to be a sticky
under the vintage Submariner heading. The watches were obtained for this particular treatment by Eric Wind of Wind Vintage.
For a thorough treatment of the earlier submariners, it is still hard to beat. That and the Skeet-Urul volume.
