SS Rolex Submariner or SS Submariner Date?

Hi

I understand that getting a sub is hard but between the two latest SS Sub models (black dial), the Sub and the Sub Date which is more hard to get and in demand? Why?

Which of the two has a higher premium in the aftermarket and why?

I would say there both difficult to find. Usually SS sport models are in higher demand. The reason I prefer a SS Sport model, is for its simplicity. It’s a piece I feel, doesn’t attract to much attention.

A good part of the reason is the historical essence of the tool watch Submariner.
The black dialed 5512/5513 followed by the 1680s set the tone and became the
Rolex watch symbol by the 1970s. The Hodinkee Reference: Submariner
shows this development from the Submariner origin in 1953.
Personally, have no interest in any Rolex unless it is SS and black dial-there you have it and it sets demand.

With all due respect to others on the forum, I would consider how practical you need your watch to be. Will it be your only Rolex? After years with a TT DJ as my first and only, I need to have a date complication, as do my other two non-Rolexes.

I was on the phone with my AD today, checking in with my on-going wish list for a Rolex unicorn. Whichever comes in first gets my check (kid in college), but all three are SS models with date.

The symmetry and the historical significance of the no-date Sub is compelling, but I need to have a watch I can use, not just look at and admire.

Myself, I would skip the date model. Would want something different then the other models I have with dates.

I always wanted a no date black face ss Submariner. Got a 2020 & Love it. Just love the clean look. My phone tells me the date. Lol

I have and prefer no dates on Rolex Subs. I do have most others with dates. In the wild I always see Sub dates and most of those are two tone. Rarely do I spot a Submariner.

In my opinion the date window is so classic Rolex it’s hard to go wrong.

I have a sub and a few other models including a Daytona. It never even occurred to me while I was chasing a Daytona down for purchase that it doesn’t show the date. I ended up with it, excited like crazy. I wear it to the office the next day and at one point I needed to confirm the date so I look at my watch and no date! I was initially pissed but eventually I got over it (because we all have phones with the date and the Daytona never had the date, ever, so I respected the heritage). But having the date on a watch is something I find
Incredible helpful. The sub, you get a choice.

I’ve had the 116610 (sub date) and recently acquired the 124060 (sub) and much prefer the no date sub. Aesthetically it’s more pleasing and the argument about needing the date is irrelevant when you work in front of computers and phones.

I also hate having to adjust the date monthly or anytime the reserve runs out. Sounds silly but I prefer to wear it and not have to constantly adjust it.

Lastly, it’s the original that was preferred by the likes of Steve McQueen, Sean Connery, Che Guevara, Diego maradona and countless others.

no rolex is really that difficult to find... they make a million time pieces a year.

They are only difficult, or nearly impossible, to find at MSRP

date is a must for me. rolex cyclops to me a like its a patented design. Dont find it protruding. Only complain is that it gathers dust around cyclops easily and adjustment of date when comes to month with only 28th and 30 days.

I wore a sub date for 15 years so it's all I knew. I wanted the iconic magnifier and bezel and as I said I had it for a long time. I have recently purchased an Explorer 1 39mm and was curious to see if I missed having the date complication...

I found that not having the date on the watch was a relief - to my eyes and even mentally - let me explain. I would (as most of us do) check the time often and I each time out of habit I would check the date - why - habit. It's not that I even needed to know it at that moment and even if you check it once it doesn't change for 24 hours.

SO, now when I look at my wrist it is to quickly see the time, I don't miss seeing the date and really don't miss having the date in my mind all of the time - always reminding me of something coming up or a deadline of some sort.

It's just a more ZEN experience looking at the dateless watch and seeing what time it is at that very moment - the moment that you are looking at the watch - nothing more.
