Have to add my two cents because this makes me so angry. Where are my riots and city burnings.... oh wait, we memorialize the fallen with peace and honor.

Domestic disturbance call. When I was deputy many years ago those were always the most volatile calls. Anything could happen.

Sickening.. shootings of officers up 40% this year.
Nobody is signing up for all the unfilled positions and vacancies. Very few people want to do this job anymore and I can't in good conscious recommend it to anyone. |

The media doesn't do investigative journaling anymore. I remember 25-30 years ago visiting my papa in Illinois (Army Colonel). He got his news by reading the Sunday paper. End of story. Anyway back to the fallen heroes. It will be interesting to see if this was a domestic call just to ambush cops or what...... I wish we could wear full tactical vests with rifle plates at all times..... sure it doesn't look like Andy Griffith era..... but guess what? It's not that era. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Sad indeed.
The slain police were Jose Gilbert “Gil” Vega and Lesley Zerebny. Vega was a 35-year veteran who was due to retire in December and had chosen to work overtime on Saturday. Zerebny, 27, had just given birth to a baby girl four months ago. She had been with the department for a year and a half. They were the first Palm Springs police officers to die in the line of duty since 1962. |

Police Officer Gil Vega and Police Officer Lesley Zerebny were shot and killed while responding to a domestic disturbance call in the 2700 block of Cypress Road.
The officers had arrived at the scene and were at the front door when the subject inside opened fire, fatally wounding Officer Zerebny and Officer Vega. The man then barricaded himself inside of the home. A third officer was also wounded during the incident. Officer Vega had served with the Palm Springs Police Department for 35 years and was scheduled to retire only two months after his murder.

It's tragic for any officer to perish. However, when so close to retirement it makes it that much harder to see. They have served their time. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I know on my department we are having a hard time hiring qualified candidates. When they show up for orientation and hear the starting pay, its like someone yelled fire! Several people get up and leave. Not many what to risk their life for what a cops starting pay is. Its sad, I have been a cop for over 25 years and I have never seen it this bad. I am in the patrol division and I have recently been talking to the wife and kids that it may be time for me to move to a different division within the department or look to retire and find a different job. Times have changed and not for the better. I just saw a news clip of a female officer that got severely beat on the job and she said she was afraid to you her firearm for fear of the public backlash.

Thanks Tim, I hope I am not far behind you in retirement but I still need to find a job just no more Law Enforcement. I worry every day about all the young men and women I have working for me. I tell them everyday at roll call that times have changes and they need to be extra careful and watch their backs. Even if they are just sitting in the car doing reports or getting out at a gas station for a coffee.
I will say though, recently I have had more and more people come up to me and thank me for the job I do. Some even have bought our meals without us knowing and told the waitress to tell us thank you. This tells me that the good people out there really appreciate what we do and know that we are being targeted. |

6.5 to go. Nowadays, it's not worth staying past your twenty.

Agree with both of you, I stayed an extra year over when I should have gone, wouldn't do that now. I was very fortunate that I had some good amounts of excess interest monies added to my pension early in my career which enabled me to not have to work after my 26 years, having health care after retirement also helps immensely. I'm one very luck guy.

It is if your one of the first academy classes to be put on the 25 year plan..... ha. Ha. I was injured on the job in regards to an OIS..... I was on workers comp for 6 months.... between recovery and a subsequent surgery. I have to work an extra 6 months after "25 years" to make up for that time off. How much BS is that. And just to make 100% of a paycheck for something that happened ON THE JOB, I had to burn sick time since workers comp only covers 70something percent. (Or something like that). I don't know why workers comp has to make it difficult. Quote:
You should see what they are doing with our retirement system. Bunch of legislators "borrowed" money from it and have screwed everything up. New employees don't get state retirement either. They have to do a 401k to who knows what's next. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

I know what you mean about borrowing from your pension. My dad was a teacher in Illinois. They have been borrowing and not paying back for decades. My dad paid 10% of his salary into it for 30 years and isn't eligible for social security. The state doesn't have the billion dollars they owe and are trying to cut back on the pension. Goes to show, state workers are getting hosed everywhere, not just LEO. |
