Gift For Customer?

So I have got a great customer that is also a friend. I do a TON of business with him.

He is a very wealthy guy and wants for nothing. But he is also pretty frugal and does not really seem to spend a ton of money on himself.

He is turning 50 and having a pretty huge bash in Manhattan next month. His wife is actually throwing it.

It is going to be a super fancy event and it is from 8-1, so I imagine it will be a shit show, to some degree.

I have zero idea what to get him.

He wears a 14060 and refuses to "upgrade" because he does not want to spend the money. I was thinking about getting him a 114060.

I think this is likely way way way way too expensive. And I really don't want to go that route.

But I have no idea what to get him.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Mustang with a few hundred miles

What are his hobbies?

Does he like electronics? Maybe Amazon Echo--not expensive but he might like?

How much do you want to spend?

Should be a good party!

I wouldn't bother with the watch.... It's not your place to mark his 50th in that way.

Does he have any hobbies for which you can get some luxury item? Instrument? Golf? Failing that, any particular wine or spirit that he likes for which you can spend a bunch?

ha.......that is not going to happen.

I am not really sure of his hobbies. Except soccer which he just stopped playing due to age.

I will ask his partner and brother. That is a good place to start.

Thanks.

Can't help you, but just wanted to say that IMO there is no upgrade from the 14060.

I am going to check on all that.

Thanks!!!

and yeah, it is going to be one heck of a shindig. My wife already demanded we go shopping this weekend. A new suit for me and a new dress for her. This party is gonna cost me a small fortune.

Maybe a signed soccer ball or jersey from his favorite team? You could then have it framed/encased.

I agree with you that you shouldn't be buying him a Rolex...
Always tough to shop for someone who can get whatever they want... My father-in-law is one of those. After buying countless ties/dining gift certificates I went a different route. He has a horse racing "stable" so I went to our club pro and had the jockey silks printed on golf balls and gave him 12 dozen. He loved them and only cost me $600.
Try to get personal... He likes soccer, can you go to a game/get a box etc etc? Favorite team, customized jersey? Favorite whiskey? I know Jim Beam you can get your own barrel or have bottles engraved...

It's not for you to replace his watch.

A top quality bottle of cognac (Louis XIII?) will do the trick. Even if he doesn't drink cognac, he will always have guests that's do.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. So far, I'm thinking socks.

But really, I'm going to ask his brother about some more details. I'd like to get him something that will stand out.

He's a bit of a mentor to me as well. And I'd like to get him something that will make a point.

I'll keep you guys updated.

I understand that you are all good on this now, but it is an interesting topic as I think we all have this dilemma at times. What do you buy the person that could buy whatever they wanted themselves.
I usually check with their partner as to their favourite wine/spirits and go that way. If it's a party then a bottle of top shelf Champagne is a good bet and you might even get a glass of it yourself.

What about a new glidelock bracelet for his sub? It's an upgrade, but not like buying a brand new watch.

Very wealthy people can buy almost anything so what they are looking for are experiences and memories. Maybe ask his family if there is somewhere he wants to go or some activity he wants to do and, within reason, arrange it.

A thoughtful gift, but a word of caution.
In some cultures, gifting a knife is thought to bring bad luck and may be offensive to the recipient. A way around this is to include a small coin with the knife which the recipient then gives back to the gifter as "payment", thereby receiving the knife as purchase rather than as a gift.

I think is a classy move. For a guy that doesn't spend a lot of money on himself. He probably doesn't a nice pen.
