Breitling Emergency on BBC Top Gear

Did anyone catch tonight's show? I don't think it did Breitling any favours as he never got rescued. The beacon was picked up though!

I watched it on the DVR last night. He did not get rescued immediately because May and Clarkson are a couple of knuckleheads. The watch did what it should. The rescue crew, not so much. Too much messing with the Velociraptor and taking breaks to get some rest.

Breitling Emergency on BBC Top Gear

Not to mention the first watch that he had on the mountain (the one he activated) was a first generation, the one tied to the tree was a second (current) generation, and the third watch showed was not even an emergency. It was a B50.

It was clearly all fake and it made me mad because that's my all time favourite show.

Looked like the same watch to me throughout, new generation.

Yes it's a light entertainment program, about cars, not watches. Lots of things will be set up for filming. You don't think Hammond was actually on that mountain for 5 days?

My all time favourite episode has to be the season 20 van hovercraft on the river. Couldn't stop laughing throughout that one. Looking forward to seeing this emergency episode.

You would gasp for air and thank your lucky stars every time it came on if you were subjected to the American version.

Tried one on, but couldn't justify the price even with a good discount. Cool technology though and it is one big watch. Although, the weight and fit wasn't too bad for a watch that size.

They still monitor the frequencies it but it is more of a close by beacon like if there are planes in the area. I believe there was also a military version of the first emergency which uses a military channel.

I am no expert on this. but i heard that the authority has stopped monitoring the old frequency for alert, but still does for search and rescue.

that means they won't know if you activate the beacon unless they are notified of something happened (by other means) and actively searching.

Most pilots when enroute still monitor 121.5 (which is the frequency the older Emergency transmits on). We know lives depend on a quick rescue, especially in Alaska where I fly, so the frequency will always be monitored on some level by the end users. It's just a matter of someone being close enough to hear the signal. The newer 406 GPS is definitely a superior system for sure.

I do a lot of hiking in the mountains, sometimes miles from the nearest road. I carry a PLB but was interested in the Emergency and went to try on the II First, it is BIG, I think 51MM? We are talking a man size watch. Having said that, let's think about the purpose of this watch, it's not s designer piece but rather a functional tool. So, for that reason I accept the size. Now, comparing the old versus new, to me this is a no-brainer. If you ever need to use this possibly life saving instrument, you want the absolute BEST chance of survival. With the 406 freq now included, that is by far the Emergency II.

Hmmmm... as a private flyer I got a Mk1 Emergency a few years ago to wear along side the PLB on my lifejacket. My theory was if it it went all tits up I hit the PLB, and if I am still alive pull the pin on the watch. They find the PLB then me... or what's left of me. They still use 121.5 for the local stuff so safe enough. Looked at the MK2 and no way will I wear the beast or pay £11k for it.... You could buy a few PLB packs and put them in every pocket......Packed in flying for a bit so the Mk1 will be going now... shame as it's a great daily wear.

Doesn't sound like anyone on this forum owns a new emergency.
