PAM Help

Hello everyone.

I was hoping that I might be able to get some advice here.

I know more than enough about Rolex watches but I don't know anything about the different Panerai models. I've looked at several websites but there are quite a few models to choose from (a lot more than Rolex...).

Next year I'd like to start shopping for a PAM. I'm looking for the following features:

-44mm
-black leather strap
-second hand at the 9 o'clock position
-date
-wind or automatic

Would anyone be able to suggest a model number that I can start researching? I'm pretty sure that I'd like to start with preowned as my first one. Is there a set amount that I shoudl try to budget before even starting to shop around?

I appreciate the feedback.

Many thanks.

Scott

While a few do come with the black strap I wouldn't require that. Its very easy to change and I promise you will get more than one strap.

There are quite a few models that have what you want but the basic and more popular are 104 164 111 312 351. 111 is the safest bet of those. It is very popular and easy to sell if you decide you don't like it. Moving up in price the 233 is pretty amazing!

If you have an iPad there is an app you can get that shows many of the models currently available.

Missed the date. 111 does not have that feature. You are mostly limited to autos if you require the date.

IMO 1st don't purchase a piece for resale value.
Any & all those Pams r great, the 111 is a great base piece IMO, & the 312 is just SICK ,auto,in-house.
But If your not sure about the purchase I would stick to the 111 or a 000.IMO I think 1st purchase should be a base w/ sandwich dial..
Happy Hunting...

I was in a similar situation 6 months ago....i purchased a new 312, which meets all your criteria...comes with a nice black croc strap, but since I purchased numerous colored straps and I simply adore it....good luck

Wow! The Ipad app is exactly what I needed to get me up to date on the different models.

Thanks for the recommendation.

104 comes with the black strap on a deployant and fits the rest of your criteria. Its a little cheaper and fits differently than the 312. Its probably worth trying one on.

I'd say 312 hands down but try it on... The 1950's case doesn't seem as comfortable to some compared to the Luminor case

312

1950s case, auto in-house movment with 3 day power reserve, sandwich dial, quck change strap, second hand and date...its a great all around Panerai. I went with the 328 because it is basically the same watch as the 312 but has a great bracelet to change it up even more than leather or rubber.

Perhaps a silly question, but what is a sandwich dial?

Also, what stores carry the Panerai brand? Before I make a decision I need to see them in person.

Many thanks again!

Sandwich dial is a two layer dial with lume on the lower layer visible through "cut-outs" in the upper...gives a cool sense of depth. As for where to check them out in person, you have two options in GA according to their website.

Look at the Rads too. They may be 45mm, but they wear smaller than the 44mm Luminiors.

The 268 is a deal IMHO.

Well I went to Brown & Co. today and I have to say I was very pleased. I was treated very well and was able to try on anything that I wanted. They even gave me a very thick (and nice) catalog.

I came to the following conclusions. First, the 40 mm is kind of small and there was only a few hundred dollar price difference to the 44 mm model so it seems like a no brainer. I was shocked when I was told that it was only $300 cheaper.

Then I looked at them models that were recommended: 104, 990, 312. The 312 just seemed too beefy for me, although it was a beautiful watch. I could see myself staring at the back for hours if given the chance.

I ended up really liking the 104. Sandwich dial was awesome. Also really liked the 090. I really like the additional complication of the power reserve indicator. Both fit really well and were quite comfortable.

I was sad to see that the bracelets didn't really fit me. I have a small wrist and with the size of the watch, the links just didn't curve around tight enough to my wrist.

With all of that being said, can anyone offer any more feedback on the Pam 104 vs Pam 090?

Thank you all again for the help and feedback so far.

Hey Scott,

I think both of the 104 and 90 have painted/sausage dial.

Good luck!

Arrived today. Must say, the Panerai folks really know how to package their watches. Very nice!

Love the watch. I thought 44mm was going to be a bit big on me, but it fits really well.

Thanks for everyone's advice.

My vote would be for a 233:

233 has everything you need and you get the domed glass and sleek 1950 case with 8 day power reserve as bonus.. lovely piece and modern day pam kingpin... you will love it!

Please just try a Radiomir on. I was in love with Luminors and I tried a Radiomir on. They are nice and worth at least a test drive!

Nothing wrong with Luminors either. Have one myself!

Like a few others, I'd suggest looking into the 312...
