i would love to know what you guys are doing to your watches

I saw someone post a pretty nice ding in the lug of their LV yesterday, which doesn't really bother me. i mean, it is a watch, and it is meant to be worn. however, i did take a look at my Tag which i wore pretty much every day from 2001-2011. it has some swirls, etc, but not a real ding on the whole thing.

what are you people doing to get these deep dings on your watches? is 904L soft? i don't get it!

FYI, my (new to me) GMT II, which i have had since last summer, doesn't have a ding yet. maybe i am just lazy or not adventurous.

Lets see me and my watch have done this in the last 30 days; hunt, shoot, fish, swim, dive, workout, ride my motorcycle, change oil in my motocycle, deal with airport madness and many adult activities that can't be discussed here

I'm with azguy.

I guess the real questions are:
1) Do you ever do anything active with your watch on?
2) Do you take your watch off during these "activities"?

My dive watches are all scratched up from beach diving and wreck diving. Then, there are just scratches from everyday wear.

I stupidly reached behind a wheel while someone started a car and hit suspension parts with my Daytona. Not a pretty case gouge

Another time was pulling a power steering belt onto a pulley in a hurry and scraped an Expl.II across the bracket when it slipped. Bezel took the hit.

In both cases I was stupid - and the watch saved my wrist from a nasty cut. So maybe that was karma.

For years I worked on cars with my trusty Speedmaster on. It has dozens of nasty battle scars to prove it. Now, I take mine off and set it on a bench when I'm working and my watches stay looking nice.

These angular lugs on the SubC and GMTc look a nighmare. Had a Tag F1 for 10 years, which had very rounded lugs. Never any dings and wore the hell out of it.

Had a Breitling with Angular lugs and didn't have it long before it had a ding on it.

Prob also the fact the Tag was tiny compared to the Ceramics is also a factor.

Some are more carefull than others.

Some would say they use them as they were intended to be used.

No matter how carefull you are accidents can and will happen.

But in no way do I think this indicates that these watches are soft.

I've got a nice chunk taken out of the bezel on my Tag as well as scuffs in the anti-reflective coating that show up purple under certain light.

This is what happens when you wear your watch biking, come to a stop, and don't get your feet unclipped in time.

There's also a scuff from where I was wearing it on my mountain bike a different time and also went down. (Hmmm, gotta wear my Citizen when mountain biking from now on. )

But the pain fades over time and it really IS my watch, the only downside being I'd have to get them fixed if I wanted to sell it.

Note my Tag is 45mm so I'm also continuously bumping it on just about everything…

I think that's key; for whatever reason I haven't yet learned to take my watch off until the first time I whack it on something (wall, counter, etc.)

If I just wore my watch on "nights out," it would stay perfect forever.

If your watch doesn't get a few marks and scratches, you either don't do much, don't get out much, or you don't wear it much.........

It's really easy to ding a watch. If you're walking quick swinging your arms it's easy to slam it into a metal door post or railing. At least that's how I chewed up my Air King. Even after wearing for 14 years, it looked brand new after a service.

Ha! I've done that as well as accidentally dragging it on the wall in a house I've lived in for 18 years (you'd think I'd know the width of the hallways by now. )

I always leave whatever watch I happen to be wearing on my wrist regardless of what I am doing, be it scuba diving, posing at the gym, servicing a robot at work or cooking.

I don't intentionally mistreat them, and I'm always as careful as I can be within reason, but from time to time they do get an unavoidable ding.

I am a bit surprised at the beating some of my Rolex watches have taken though, they look much worse than the titanium Eco-Drive I wore 24/7, including rock climbing, for over a decade.

refitting the shop, changing oil & bulbs on the van plus much more....as i see it, if you ain't gonna wear it there's no point in having it. dings & swirls are all part of ownership & only go towards building character

In regard to the 904L being more or less damagable than the standard steel on a Tag. I have a few pics of one of my Tags and it has definately taken more damage than my GMT. Most of these are desk diving scars, but the scratch in the band came from a door handle, and another material remover resulted from a battle with a bicycle crank.

Nothing I own stays perfect, that's what makes them mine!

I hardly ever remove my EXP ll if I'm working on something, until I get into something that starts scraping against it. It has a few dings & scratches, but that's why I use it for daily wear I not one of the others. If it get's too rough, I'll take it off. I wear an 18k diamond ring on each hand, each one worth more than a new Explorer. But I but never think to remove them at all, ever. They have taken a pounding over the years, and have been cleaned & polished a only few times. I just never think to take then off when the watch comes off.

I wear my Tag and Omega watches everywhere and all the time: shower, sleeping, working out, at work,,etc so it gets hit hard against different stuff but it adds charcter to the steel (which is an advantage, unlike the softy ceramic IMO) but when it comes to my future Rolex i wouldn't do most of those stuff at all while wearing the watch :D

The ceramic versions of the professional series watches are very durable. Yes it possible to break a bezel, but anything can be broken. My GMT II - C shows far less wear than the bezel of either Tag I own.

I'm not bothered by the occasional scratch or ding (it's inevitable) but I don't regard battle scars as a badge of honor either. So when it's time to go running, hiking, biking, fishing, hunting, etc. the good watches stay in the box and I strap on a very battle-scarred Casio.
