I thought about that too yesterday. He does take sabbaticals from this place occasionally, hopefully that’s what it is.

Spoke to Bas. He told me to get a life and says hello to all of you. He’s also fine and being productive, unlike us.

Your assuming he worked for Rolex and not a Rolex AD.

Which I think would be a good assumption. My understanding is that he is a watchmaker for Rolex.

He works (or used to work) as a Rolex watchmaker at an AD in Holland if my memory serves me right.

Many assumed, and IMO were led to believe that Bas worked for Rolex. It’s very doubtful for several reasons that should be obvious enough.

Working for Rolex itself in a service center is completely different and more prestigious than working as a watch maker for an AD.

I could be wrong. But I doubt it.

I can’t speak to the obvious signs of where Bas works but as someone who knows a Rolex tech employee at an RSC and more at ADs as watchmakers, Rolex is where you get the knowledge on the assembly line and tools then you run to an AD where the money is better and you can build your personal brand with better hours and flexibility.

And you’re seen as a local artist-God in the local watch community able to work on many brands and know the money in your market, rather than be a number with an NDA.

Of course some do stay as they like the prestige, no doubt, but they’re few and far between these days.

It’s a big reason why Rolex and the industry is paying for new watchmakers schooling and tooling with the caveat that they take a job with one of the big makers upon graduating. But many still leave and earn more with big ADs or resellers or go to auction houses.

Regardless of where Bas works … he knows more about watch movements than the vast majority on this forum.
