A Tool and his Tool

So I was up in nowhere, PA this weekend for an indoor soccer tournament with my daughters. As I'm sitting on the bleachers, some dude walks by and sits down next to me. He's wearing a White Ceramic Daytona (I'm on the waitlist for this watch, and believe it or not, it's the first time I've actually seen the SS version in the flesh). So I begin to make conversation. I intentionally roll up my sleeve so he can see my newly acquired BLRO. The stage is set for two watch dudes to geek it out, right?

Well, no. He turns out to be completely oblivious and even worse, disinterested. When I asked him how he got his watch he said something like "my brother in law works in some jewelry store. He told me it was like a 10 year wait list for this watch, so I bought it". I asked him if he liked it and he said something like "it's a Rolex so I guess I have to.". Argh. Then, I think to be polite, he asked me "what kind of watch do you have". I decided this was my cut the conversation moment. I replied "it's a very difficult to acquire Invicta. Good luck in the tournament".

It's hard to stomach that a guy like this has this unicorn watch and there are SO many enthusiasts that would represent that beautiful watch so much better.

Its a shame he is less impressed with owning it than someone who regards it as a grail watch, but at least he is wearing it and has not gone down the route of flipping it so he may well grow to appreciate it in the long run.

Ok...couple of things.

1) Never speak to strangers about their watches. 9/10 your scenario is what happens, it is disappointing and frustrating. Just Don't Do It.

2) Rolex is a difficult to be an enthusiast for as we must share the product with the general public, who are like 99% of Rolex buyers / owners. Those 99% DO NOT CARE about the watch other than it is a ROLEX....and that it's the BEST, which in turn makes THEM the best. That is it. So your enthusiasm for the brand and the pride of ownership, geek talk WILL NOT be shared with Joe Public. The best place to have those conversations are right here....not at a soccer match. It's sad, but true. Just stick to the forums and you will be better off...

Weird.

If you would’ve replied “the new Rolex GMT. It’s funny, there’s also a waitlist for this one!” and chuckled a bit....

Maybe he wouldn’t think you were just a Rolex fanboy or something and open up and talk to you more

I feel that maybe he’s tired of being asked about the watch all the time by people that aren’t “genuinely” into watches or whatever

Idk.

Orrrrrrrr....

Maybe you’re right and he just doesn’t care lol

I don't comment on other folks' watches, and I don't want others to comment on mine. No need to draw attention.

I’ve had similar experiences. I don’t comment anymore. The worst was when a former co-worker had received a DJ from his mother as a gift. I inquired and he told when he first received it he hadn’t worn it in several days and that he thought the battery was dead. He took it back to the AD and raised a fuss about a new watch needing a battery. Followed by a I can’t believe these things wind themselves but it sucks I’ve got to wind it if I don’t wear it a lot.

THESE are the guys that give Rolex a bad time to most of the population. Most people think a guy who wears Rolex is just some rich "tool", and it is because of guys like this. You should have asked him the reference number. We on the other hand (no pun) wear Rolex because of the quality and craftsmanship that goes into them. The story each one has. I love running into a watch person, but occasionally you come across these types.

Actually, he was appreciating the finer thing in life which is his child's soccer tournament not the watch on his wrist.

The correct reply to his pompous indifeerence is “this is the super rare Rolex Pepsi. They are impossible to find, but Ronaldo and I are pretty tight and he made it happen”.

that's a riot.

99/100 it works out just fine.

but sure, sometimes there is a tool such as in the OP's story.

so many great conversations have been had by me. I have met so many cool people. it would be a shame to miss out on so many good experiences by being afraid of a the potential bad ones.

I don’t think any type of Rolex wearer can claim to be more worthy than another because they ‘appreciate’ them more.

It’s just a watch and good for him he wears it.

True, but you don't have to come off as rude or arrogant if someone is showing interest in your watch, which is what the OP was implying.
And if you drop 13k on a watch just because there is a long waitlist and that's it, that makes you a tool.

The way I read it was total ambivalence from the 3rd party.

It’s only interpreted as arrogance when one puts such a large importance on it from one’s self, hence the petulant retort about an invicta, as opposed to taking the chance to educate someone about not just what they had on their wrist, but how lucky they were to be wearing it.

Is there a difference using the statement above between someone buying it because he’s been told there’s a waiting list vs. someone buying a certain piece just because it’s hard to get/in vogue and with a high resale value and are ‘in the know’ from reading TRF.

I think there is a difference between someone dropping a large amount of money on something not knowing what the hell they are buying, and someone who spends the same amount but knows what they are buying, certainly. When you buy something of this value based off of the exclusivity of it rather than the appreciation of it, there is a shred of arrogance there, IMO.

At least he's honest WITH HIMSELF as to why he bought it.

I won't talk to a stranger about his watch unless we've already broken the ice in some other way.

Same here. Even the OP said "Then, I think to be polite, he asked me "what kind of watch do you have".

Anyway, lost me at "I intentionally roll up my sleeve so he can see my newly acquired BLRO".
