Call Bob Ridley or the other person recommended in your area. I would even go as far as stop posting and do it ASAP. Don't touch ANYTHING on the watch. You could greatly decrease the value by damaging it. If this is in fact an authentic double red, congratulations!!!

Thank you all for all your positive, maybe, feedback. I am hesitant to ship the watch as some of you have mentioned. What is the name of the jeweler who handles vintage watches in New York?

Wonder how the police came across it in the first place, is there a chance Rolex has that serial on its MIA list, and the police figured it for a knockoff and dumped it instead of doing a check?

Does Rolex have a list like that? If so, can I call them to see who it was originally sold to?

AFAIK serial numbers of stolen watches are reported to Rolex and added to their list. You certainly have not done anything wrong at all, but if the police recovered it when they nicked a burglar or thief, I'd imagine two scenarios.

A: The previous owner didn't know what it was, had it since way back, and chalked it up as a lost watch, and will probably figure he had a good run out of it and buy a new one.

B: The previous owner knew exactly what it was, kept it safe until it was taken from him, has probably claimed a very decent insurance payout from it, and reported it to Rolex as a stolen watch, the type of guys on this site would all report the serial.

This is pure speculation and it could well have come to the police some other way, but looking at it, someone cared about that watch, enough to even keep the original folded link bracelet in good condition for its age, and given the profile of this watch (and the profile its soon to have once its picked up from here from a news site or two and crosslinked on other forums) its a consideration that it may draw a straight line back to the last wrist it sat on.

But that's just what floated into my head reading this thread, don't take my remarks as gospel by any means, I'm just as stunned as everyone else at this amazing find!

if you really want to get it thouroghly checked out then email me at stevemulholland3@aol.com and I will give you directions to a top-notch vintage Rolex expert in New York..
and if he gives it the o.k. then I can fly out tomorrow and hand you a bag full of money!..lol
but seriously..get it authenticated first and foremost and once you know exactly what your working with then we can figure out an apprx. value..
I wish you luck either way!

Which police auction did you go to? BX or BK?

If it were a replica, the NYPD wouldve destroyed it. So I'm guessing that someone there either authenticated it or was a bit unsure and let it pass through into auction. Obviously, this does not mean, no am I implying that it is a genuine mk0, so you need to get it checked out and documented.

Email Steve for his contact, then go visit him.

Just make sure that whatever happens, DO NOT sell it, DO NOT have them send it away for service, DO NOT let it out of your sight. Bring a camera and take detailed photographs.

The NYPD are hardly experts on vintage sport Rolex. There are replicas that can (and have) fooled seasoned experts, let alone a cop manning the property desk.

That said, it seems awfully odd that someone would have snatched ANY Rolex for $350 at any sort of public auction. If the auction room had more than 10 people in it, SOMEONE would have upped the bid. Rolex has been synonymous with expensive for decades. It's a household name. The idea of a room full of people completely uninterested in an expensive brand name watch is a bit hard to swallow.

I also find it strange that the OP seems to know so little about Rolex ("How do I take the back off?"), but in another post states "The caseback looks original." How does one know that a case back looks original if they don't even know how it opens? This seems highly incongruous. Furthermore, the comment "Why can't I find any any watches on the internet that has the same red writing? Mine doesn't have the 2000 written on it." also raises a flag. If someone has seemingly little to no knowledge of vintage sport Rolex, how do they arrive at such an astute observation regarding a highly specific detail such as a missing 2000? If I showed my mother a vintage sub on a Monday, then showed her a double red SD a week later, she would likely assume it was the same watch I'd shown her the week prior. She *might* comment on the lack of cyclops, since most layman identify Rolex with the cyclops.

Another thing that bothers me about the whole thing is the crystal. The OP claims the original crystal was scratched and had it replaced. The jeweler just happened to have a crystal that fit in stock, but not the correct one...?

A Rolex that sells for $350 at a public auction. Ok, MAYBE.
A non collector who hones in on a super specific dial anomaly? Ok, MAYBE.
A jeweler who just happens to have an incorrect crystal that manages to fit a very specific vintage Rolex. Ok, MAYBE.

All 3 in one story? Hmm...

I could be wrong, but my understanding is that there were no 1665's without gas escape valves or case back writing???

Look at all of 'em coming out of the woodwork to "help" our friend here. They have even provided phone numbers. All with one post under their belt and an itchy palm. Be carful, very careful of those who lurk and post. This site is cross ref'd all over the place.

My post was regarding personal security measures the OP needs to take. Not going to say what I said in the PM but it is nothing out of the ordinary, simply made the OP aware of technical issues that could essentially give a home address down to 3m plus or minus.

That being said what Nicko just posted has a LOT of merit. If this watch is in fact genuine people have been killed for a lot less money. I'm just an old cop and DoD intel analyst trying to educate the OP- not on the watch but on what could be a serious threat to safety.
