I’m a born flipper

So I bought my first Rolex-Exp 39mm mk2- going on three years ago. Was looking for a do-everything watch. Kept that one for almost two years. I really liked that watch. It was discrete, had great lime, very nice bracelet, and a strong history behind it. But one thing bugged. It was all dial.

So then I flipped it for a 114060 just about a month ago. Again, a fantastic watch, the bezel, the bracelet, the dial...everything just really worked. But for me, I just felt it yelled Rolex too much. I found myself keeping my right hand over the watch in meetings. And I realized wearing a bezel in a suit made me uncomfortable. And I like knowing that I’m wearing a finely engineered timepiece but I don’t want everyone else to know. And I live in Colorado. Diving is not something I plan on doing.

Some guy actually asked me if I was a diver! Thought that was hilarious. I mean, if I was wearing a speedy would he have asked if I was an astronaut?

So this week I flipped the 114060 for a 114270. I love it. Has the history of the 39mm but not a plate-sized dial. I don’t feel I need a 2nd watch to fill in when I’m wearing a suit. It’s discrete. Elegant and sporty. Was worried about the small dial and downgraded bracelet, but I really like the dial size and the bracelet is very nice.

Ive learned that flipping watches is a great way to lose money. I’ve also decided that chasing after a one watch for all occasions is, for me, not realistic. And I’m not flipping this one, no matter what. In fact, I’m eyeing a gently used 16570. Think it would make a great addition.

I know just how you feel, I’ve owned all three of those watches and sadly flipped them all. I miss the explorer the most especially the 36mm! Don’t sell it! I’m a diver but felt the same about the sub, screamed Rolex to much for my taste, but the explorer is perfect, I hope to add one to my collection in the future. Wear and enjoy in good health

You’re quite right - it’s much cheaper to buy two (or more) watches than it is to keep flipping through watches looking for one perfect watch. I know whereof I speak.

Congrats on the 36mm Explorer! Fantastic watch, absolute classic.

Congrats on the Explorer! Definitely better to start adding instead of flipping. I trade around a lot too, and my experience has been that it’s hard to stay even, swapping watches. The Explorer II is a wonderful piece. Maybe a white dial to give you some variety? The polar 16570 was my first Rolex. It’s a true tool watch.

I think you had it right on the money with the first watch based on what you say you like and should have kept it there. Congrats on the 36mm exp. If you miss the 39 lume dial and did one last flip I wouldn't blame ya.

Congrats! I have the Explorer 39mm, SubC and the Daytona 116520 among other rolexes. It is a blessing. All are superb watches! The Explorer 39mm is perfect for traveling specially overseas....it is the stealth watch. Perhaps you should consider the 14060M. Enjoy your Explorer 36mm in good health!

Congratulations on the Explorer! Like they say "experience keeps an expensive school!" I love my 114270, it's a very versatile and elegant watch.

Sorry but I don't count that as flipping. You have gradually rotated your watches as your tastes have changed. And good on you for doing so!

IMO there are two mindsets of WIS I dislike:

1) buyers who buy purely to immediately flip
2) buyers who keep watches in safes

Each to their own, it's their hard earned money etc... But still... You have owned, worn and enjoyed your pieces. You are not a flipper IMO

Sounds like you are a true WIS and I look forward to seeing more incomings...

Congrats! Next time you get the urge, add instead of flip!

I so regret flipping my Explorer 114270 :-( Partly because I really enjoyed that watch, mine was in pristine condition but mostly for the memories I had created with it. The 16570 Polar that I bought instead will for sure stay in the collection.

I actually later bought the same watch you started with but sold if for the same reason, it was all dial and proportions felt off.

Instead of re-buying the 114270 I got this Vacheron Constantin Overseas 42040. Will probably end up with a 114270 down the road again since I like this clean style of steel sports watch.

Congratulations. It is nice to be able to try out different watches. I trade a lot myself and don't think it is an issue. Enjoy.

Love that 114270. I have a 214270 that is at the AD getting updated from a Mk1 to a Mk2, can't wait to get it back because I love the understated look. Its return may spell the disposal of my GMT LN, will see...

I think having RSC change the dials is a great move.

Good choice.

The 36mm 114270 is modern enough to have a serviceable movement at Rolex Service Center and the biggest perk- Nobody ever notices you have a Rolex. A good friend of mine with a Presidential Rolex looked at mine and had to second guess mine existed. He had never seen it before. lol

Congrats.

A DJ, a Daytona and a SD43. . That'l cover the bases. They must have a few rivers in Colorado. Or there's always the shower.

Oh Man can I relate ... Had a Tudor BBB on bracelet - loved it ! but felt it was a drop too large - kept it for over a year [ long time for me ] sold it got an OP39 Blue - loved the size fit etc .. kept it for 8 months - just a little too plain - sold it and got a 39mm Explorer .
had everything - good size , better bracelet but something about the Mercedes hands ..
sold it!
Don't know where to turn , hindsight being 20/20 I suppose the explorer was about the best 1 watch for me ... just those hands ..

Looking at the Tudor 58 but not going to pay over retail -

Congrats on your watch evolution ...
- it's not flipping it is learning - living - evolving

I love my 114270, it's my 1st Rolex and will be the last. i thought the 36mm was to small since i have an omega speedy reduced at 39 and looks small on my wrist, but once i got my 114270, wow!!! i was blown away by how great it looked. I thought i wanted a sub but yes to flashy and the 114270 is just so much more class and simple but elegant at the same time. congrats on sticking with the 114270

I just purchased my first Rolex and I can see how folks get into this watch swapping frenzy... as I want a Sub date but not sure if I want a Hulk or LN..

I think saving to buy the next one is a better recourse than "flipping".. I only plan on owning two Rolex watches.. anymore and I think they would just sit around and never get worn.
