Tricky Question?

Hi TRF,

If both watches were available, and at MSRP, would you buy a SS 5164 or 5711? The choice is one or the other, and not a third choice of PP. Also, the watch you buy is to be passed on to one of your children or family. Thus, no flipping.

I happened to see a blue dial 5711 today on a colleague. Damn. That’s a mightily impressive watch. Impeccable. Stealthy. Iconic. Retro. Functional. Very much a “one watch.” The 5164 is equally impressive. It isn’t retro, and may not not considered iconic yet, but it’s versatility and function are very much to be desired.

Which would you pick and why? As many here own one or both, I’m interested in your thoughts.

Regards,
TA

Not a trick question - 5711a all the time every time. Iconic, versatile, essential

Sensational. I saw one not 20 mins ago, and put it on my wrist. It made quite the impression! On the other hand, the 5164 is quite possibly one of the best time travel watches Ive even seen.

Had the pleasure of time with many of the time and date only nautilus. I would pick any over the 5164 ; at the same time I like the cleanness of dial so I prefer 5167a

64. Ive had it way longer than the 5711 lasted for a reason. Its a better watch to just wear out and about for me. Both are great though.... and yes its the watch selected for my youngest son so its a pass down piece and wont be sold.

Thanks for the opinions. It seems is if it’s 5711, 5167A, then 5164! I’d argue that the 5167A is a subset of the 5164, and thereby not a different watch as per my original question!!

I’m at a disadvantage as I’ve held and work a 5711, but not the other two. However, it’s early days. Im seriously drawn to the 5164... and 5167. Who am I kidding, I adore all three.

5711, blue dial, very, very easy question. I own a 5712 and it's my second-favourite watch (an FPJ takes first place).

you have to take into consideration the 64 is more casual and its a pass down piece in your original post. Plot the dressiness of your grandfathers generation, your fathers, and then yours. Its a negative trend line. There is no doubt society gets more casual by the year, so there is that to consider. Your grandfathers watch is most likely way too dressy by todays standards to wear around... probably too small too.

People use to go out to dinner in a jacket and a tie so by 2040 following the tend line its probably going to be OK to do it in underwear ... 64 all the way

I prefer the dial and functions of the 64 but I do prefer the Naut over the Aqua so I would get a Naut first and in this case I would make it a 5712 in SS. I made it the 5711R.

Which do you prefer? I never understand these types of questions, don't we all have our own preferences? Why would what someone else would prefer influence you?

I have both, would have a hard time parting with either. Gun to my head, would probably keep the 5164, very versatile and durable with the rubber strap. Travel time is nice as well.

the 5711 is way more decent, I wouldn't want to pass to my kids a patek on a rubber strap.. I would prefer that in gold as well but this is just my opinion

Thanks for your thoughts. In answer to your question, I’m not seeking to be influenced by others as to which I should buy. I’m interested in what PP buyers who own them think of the choices, and why they bought one over the other. As these are watches one cannot see in any AD I know of, it’s very useful to know this information.

Appreciate your insights.

Buy either of them, whichever your AD offers you. If it's the 5164 and you are happy, great. If you get the 5164 and the 5711 comes available and you do not love the 5164 any longer, sell it. Or vice versa. Two different watches and you will need to decide which one YOU prefer.

Aquanaut for me.
If my kids want a luxury item, they can work for it, just like I did. Besides that, they wouldn't want an "old guy's watch anyway.

How about the question of expected age to inherit this watch?

If the watch were to be gifted upon high school graduation, or maybe even university graduation, the aquanaut is an excellent choice. I know at less than 25 years age I wouldn't have trusted myself to properly care for a vintage Nautilus (which this would be by that age). If I were to be gifted as a wedding gift or anything age 30+, Id treasure a vintage Nautilus like the past generation did manual Daytonas.

Perhaps the Aquanaut will one day be valued as vintage too, and I feel like you might be overthinking the whole gifting chronology just a bit.
