Rolex “proof”

After being on TRF for a while now one thing stands out to me so I thought I would mention it here as others may ponder the same:

When a post mentions “incoming” or “look what I got” type threads what is typically an early reply? “Post pics or it didn’t happen”. Basically prove it.

Yet when a post pops up such as “never wear your 1000m dive watch in the hot tub it will destroy the seals and cause damage” I never see a “prove it” type request.

I hope the fear mongering and rumors of damage, bad habits etc. end but it will take the watch community to promote the end of it. I personally hope we all agree too.

Agreed. Not really the same thing at all.

There was a thread from a guy that took a TT DJ into a hot tub and it discolored the gold. That guy got torched for the pictures posted and accused of it being a fake (if I recall correctly). Turns out he was right. So, even with the pics it went sideways for a while.

In a rare case, both the OP and the 1st comment taking a different view of things, are accurate!

Most people who damage their watches do tend to post pics. Unexpected 'patina' from a SPA, mangled screw heads, scratches from pets, falling off your mountain bike, dropping watch onto tile floor....

Wow bro, no one is actually asking for people to PROVE their incoming new watch… they are just recounting a long-standing internet tradition of using this popular phrase that essentially means “we’d like to see a photo.” No one is LITERALLY asking them to post pics to PROVE their incoming watch.

TRF clearly has a diverse population of members from teenagers to people in the 90s, so it’s not surprising this reference would be lost on some.

Yeah “prove” was probably too strong a word to use. My point was “back up your claim” so we can all see the new watch. I just see strange damage type claims here and there on TRF with no real “back up your claim” responses. Back up so we can all learn and potentially benefit from a real world example. In the end if you cannot back it up it is just speculation and that can quickly spread unfounded paranoia which I believe we have too much of.

I'm a visual learner. I like to see pics of new watches the same amount that I like to see pictures of supposed damage. Gotta learn somehow & text on a message board only goes so far.

I haven’t really noticed what you are saying. I see pictures of banged up watches on this site all the time. I recently had a thread showing my busted Sub bracelet.

i've noticed this....there are a lot of watch snobs on this site, some good and some bad...

and a lot of experience too....and you can voice your opinion good or bad...

we all learn something new everyday here....

What you call fear mongering and rumors of damage are really just some folks making what in their view are common sense good practices in the care and use of their watches. You can choose to employ them or not, that is totally up to you.

I think it's a passive aggressive way of saying 'your post is literally pointless unless you have some interesting content to post'

and honestly, i generally agree with that sentiment.

we are all human, and i would suggest that the point of a watch forum is to add the person to the watch.

so a wrist shot, a smiling face with the watch on, a picture of the watch in your local town/beach/restaurant adds humanity to an otherwise dry and pointless post.

I'd be almost certain that most of us just like to see pictures of watches... and more importantly, of them being worn and enjoyed.

There's never been a moment in my mind, where I suspect anyone saying 'pics or it didn't happen' doubted that ownership was legitimate.

The 'pics or it didn't happen' quote is used tongue in cheek. No one, as far as my experience, means it literally. As previously mentioned, watch folk are suckers for good photos.

Not a regular on different forums? It is a playfull way of saying you like to see the watch/ding/whatever the topic is about. It is meant in a good way. Not only on TRF but also on other forums i see the same phrases.

Every time I've seen it, I've felt it was implied in jest. We just want to see your new watch as fellow aficionados. I don't get the vibe that others are demanding those with incomings to prove or validate their posts.

People have submitted pics of actual damage and have been torched because of it. No matter what you do, there will be the Rolex White Knights who think Rolex never does anything wrong, their products are indestructible, and Rolex is simply a charity donating all profits for the good of mankind.

Of course there are people that post fake stuff but those are usually pretty easy to determine.

And yes, this forum is a lot about "flexing" and that is ok. If you can't flex your watch purchases on a watch enthusiast forum then where can you? :)
