Which would you choose?

Helping a friend to a decision. Both watches are on his grail list but can't get both at this time. The prices are about the same for the watches ( +- 3k ).

5070P or 5970R

What a dilemma...

Has he written off the 5170 due to its smaller size?
I prefer the balanced layout of it compared to the other two, allowing for the fact one is a PC, of course.
If it’s not in the running, even in Platinum form, then would he consider a WG 5070 with Salmon dial?

Has he also dismissed the A Lange & Sohne Datograph Perpetual in Platinum?

Condition is everything. If both are similar I'll have the 5070P.

Wow, tough one, both are among my favorite watches and hope to own either some day. I think I'd go 5070p, but it's close

5970 is a class to itself.

Really admire the 5070, but not in this matchup.

being a newbie to this sort of thing, may i ask why most of you chose the 5070p? is it because of the metal? Is the pure chrono more representative of patek than the pc chrono? i would have thought that the 5970 being a more complicated watch would get more votes.

I personally think a pure chrono is easier to maintain and wear. A manual wind perpetual calendar, while beautiful takes a few more steps every time I want to put it on.

I realize it's simple enough and interaction with your watch is fun but then again 90% of the pictures I see of them on here the date is wrong month is wrong etc. That would drive me nuts.

With all that said..the metal is a factor in my choice as well. I don't think I could pass on a 5970P, setting procedure be damned!

great point, i agree with this. Although the movement would be nicer to look at vs an automatic, I think a manual wind PC would be a deal breaker for me though. If i was interested in a PC, i would want to keep on a winder if actually wearing it.

nice article on them here though... https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/fo...lace-christies

2nded. I also wonder how people with huge collections containing many manual wind movements keep everything in order? Especially those with multiple AC and PC watches.

I'm worried about the oil drying up or collecting in one place if I don't wear my 15202 for a month! I couldn't imagine having multiple PC manual wind watches just sitting there.

all of this assumes they are watches to be worn though. Im betting a large percentage are safe queens for collectors.
