My wife's 1603, stamped 1966, sold 1968. And my rather more modern-looking 5.2 mill 17000, from only nine years later.

just picked this up last week from Jacek. '70 1600 with matte black dial. I have been looking for this watch three years. i have a matte black 16xx dial similar to this one that has been sitting in a drawer waiting for a donor watch for over 2 years. however, when i saw this on Jacek's instagram last week, i had to buy it. i found a 7836 on VRF from Derek that is stamped "2 70" that will arrive this week. cant wait to throw it on the watch. the 16xx DJ is one of the most comfortable watches Rolex ever made, imo.

1601 - 1967

My 1601 bought in 1967 by a family friend while on R&R from Vietnam (where he worked as civilian contractor from '65 up to '70).
Inherited it when he passed away. He was from my hometown in the Netherlands but emigrated to the US in the '50s...

So here some pictures in remembrance of Gerrit a true old school adventurer!

Great pics. Artland is still in business as a Rolex AD. I have a couple from there.

Very nice story behind that watch and amazing that he kept all the boxes and papers throughout the years.

My 1600 from around 1969.

Just to clarify, the 4th picture is Gerrit "driving" a Riverine boat. He is on the right side in the picture. One of his many spare time trips "in country" with the boys.

A few years ago, I purchased this 1977 Datejust from the original owner. The watch was never serviced according to the first owner. It was all original to include the oval link Jubilee bracelet.

Thank you. I think it gives the watch bit of a sportier look.

I don't think a T 22 will fit the DJ. ABC told me that a non cyclops T 25-29 would fit and sent me a T 28. My watchmaker measured it and compared it to the specs he had for the 1600 case and told me it would fit and sure enough it did.

That was my understanding also. I've not had the watch pressure tested and won't do so until it gets serviced. Until then I'll keep it nice and dry.

Chaps

This has been quite and enjoyable thread to read through and has made me appreciate the Datejust a lot more.

I noticed that a few of them did not have a Cyclops and I prefer the non Cyclops look.

Does anyone know roughly what percentage of these watches were made sans Cyclops ?

Regards

Mick

Without cyclops....Only from 1945 to 1954 approx. All thereafter had one, as far as I know. Some will have fallen off or been changed over the years.
