Interesting little article.
I dont agree with the little hierarchy this person set up.

The author of this article makes it sound like collecting watches is classified by how expensive the watch is. Explorer being the "beginner" collector and then ramping it up the Cosmograph Daytona as the "advanced" collectors watch.

While the author's choices and rankings of Rolex collectability are up for debate, I will disagree with him on one fact in particular...Sir Malcolm Campbell was not the first person to break the sound barrier.
Campbell set a number of land speed records and was the first person to exceed 300 mph in a land vehicle. He was wearing a Rolex when he did so.
Yeager, flying the X-1, was the first person to break the sound barrier. Oh, and he did it wearing a Rolex too

Very astute observation.

That stopped me in my tracks, too, but otherwise a good article.

Even though I started with an Explorer and eventually proceeded to a GMTII, by way of a DJ and a Sub, I don't believe in hierarchies of collecting.

I certainly don't think that owners of Daytonas have superior collections to mine by that very fact alone.

Where did the author get the idea Campbell broke the sound barrier?

Should have stopped reading there....How could a he think guy who doesn't even fly be the first to break the sound barrier? Obviously knows nothing about these people...and obviously can't google correctly....fail.


He should really check his facts before publishing an article...embarrassing.

Andy Green was the first to break the sound barrier on land in a manned vehicle in 1997.

Yeager was the first to demonstrate it. There were aircraft that were believed to have exceeded the sound barrier unintentionally in WW2, but there was no way to prove the case (obviously).

GQ are actually correct here. Rolex started producing the GMT with the ceramic bezel back in 2005. However only in yellow gold. (16718LN). And the first, first one was the anniversary model with the green dial.

Steel only, (116710LN ), saw it's first light at the Basel fair 2007.

And in between those, Rolex gave us the steel/yellow gold version,(116713LN), 2006.

So lots of numbers to keep track of...
