Oh man, I can close my eyes and still smell that aromatic, sweet, buzz-inducing purple ink from the 70s.

I remember my French teacher in high school in 1990 would use that word all the time when handing out copies of things. He was older and crustier than dirt.

So it's literally 30 years since I've seen/heard that word

For me, I remember sniffing those vintage Sanford's chisel markers in the metal tube that were buzz inducing.

My simple photo comparison of OP's 1680 red dial (top) with Mark VI, V, IV (below) from literature

Mark VI: feet first, with dial/red Submariner text, closed "6", the "S" is not flat but rounded

Mark V: feet first, with dial/red Submariner text, a little opened "6", flat "S"

Mark IV: feet first, with dial/white/red Submariner text, clearly opened "6", flat "S"

The OP's dial has a closed "6", which is an indication for a Mark VI. But, the "f" and "t" of feet look different, the "H" of Chronometer stands exactly above the "C" of Certified, which is not the case for a Mark VI, plus many other text deviations from an original 1680 red dial.
Fantastic post. Thanks for making the effort.

I like the OP's nice positive attitude, too. We're all here to learn and share.

Thanks. Wonderful dial and photo, nice to see the granularity of the black dial and the white text. Could you produce another photo w/o the hour hand and with the full white text?
