It is just the hipster agenda...which is odd because hispster is so 2015..

It's good to have options.

Not everyone with a 7.5" wrist and up wants to wear a 36mm watch...

By your description you may have looked more like a rat with a gold tooth back in those days. LOL.

Seriously though.
Fashions do indeed always change and it's almost inconceivable to me that those styles you describe will ever come back.
Maybe it will be spurred on by a future resurgence in disco music and the return of discos

My mother always said if you hang onto some clothes long enough they will eventually come back into fashion.
I have witnessed this to varying degrees but it's certainly not an absolute, as the fabrics seem to change slightly and don't quite match with the original style.
And yet we see Melania Trump beautifully wearing similar styles that Jackie Kennedy wore equally as well.

Watches are an accessory and not defined by a single fleeting style of clothing.
Watch style cycles seem to be more enduring and span a number of clothes fashion trends.
I think we are still in the middle of a larger watch trend.
Also the Jubilee bracelet is making a comeback on the new DJ41 despite some people identifying it with an old mans watch.

An example of significant changing of tastes, one never sees the style and size of watch around now like our Grandmothers or Great-grandmothers used to wear. Personally they always seemed so tiny and impractical especially for those with less than perfect eyesight.
Women are now wearing the sizes of watches that were once in the exclusive domain of men's fashion. And even larger still.

I have learnt one thing in this life.
Never say never

Alternatively, consider that small watches were themselves a fashion trend after the initial wristwatches were essentially pocket-watches on a strap. By your logic, the large watch craze is just a return to how it should be.

Wouldn't it be easier to just admit that you personally don't care for larger watches, rather than trying to make them some objectively incorrect thing?
That trouser trend is making a comeback (amongst the fit anyway). They hang better when tailored this way, which is why everyone wore them that way in the first place.

None of the Rolex models are large watches in context of the total market. A large watch is north of 50mm. Truly large watches are a trend that will ebb and flow. A 59mm Diesel is probably not an enduring trend, for example. Whereas, a modestly sized 42mm SkyD will be around a long time.

I think that watches and clothing are a matter of personal taste and style. I know some people that can pull off almost any look with confidence and style. I know other people that can not wear anything but jeans and a t-shirt and be comfortable. No problems or issues with it but many times I read post that put people down or the choices that they make. Just because it does not work for me does not mean that it could not work for someone else. I think it is ok to say that you don't like something or doesn't work for you without getting personal. Usually thought it is the member with limited posts and strong opinions that steps up on this. Most don't last long and move along.

The defending of large watches by some is very peculiar. Almost like it's personal. And that's coming from someone with watches ranging from 36 mm to 47 mm.

We are the only ones who give a damn.

It comes down to the golden rule for me personally.

Lugs overhang = too big

Many manufacturers who joined the larger watch trend earlier than Rolex are rlling back a bit. IWC for instance.

Very disappointed.

The SeaDweller was a nice watch, but there wasn't anything about it that made me like it better than the Sub.

Oh well, back to thinking about the Sub.
This was my reaction when I tried on a new Royal Oak 15400st. It's really the limit for my wrist and at 41mm given the size of my wrist, I'm much better off with a 15300st or 15202st. The DJ2 and DJ41 fit better for some reason. I haven't bothered to try on any Rolex larger than 41 since I wouldn't buy it anyway.

Otoh there are women with much smaller wrists than me who wear DJ2s and bigger watches, but I'm conservative when it comes to wristwatch size and I believe than for a gentlemen 36-40 is the sweet spot for a dress or sports watch and for ladies 28-31 with 36 as the max. There are exceptions (pilot watches, Panerais), but for the most part I'm just not into oversized watches. It's just a trend and like every trend it will pass.

Any watch of a size that at least half of TRF thinks they can't pull of will be too large in the future as sizes "normalize". The new normal will not be the old normal, where 40mm was considered large, but you can bet that 48-50mm watches will be out of vogue, and that 36mm will still be small for most men. The Sky Dweller is too large to persevere because it pushes the upper limits on size, although those with the largest wrists will be able to look good wearing them.

I bought a humongous 42mm watch in 1997, I have never seen a fashion trend that lasted that long and is still going !!

In addition I really can't see people throwing large expensive watches in the back of the drawer or sending them off to the charity shop like they do with clothes, so I can only assume that they will keep on wearing them.

The big big watches 47mm + will probably dies away but I really don't think the 40-44mm watches are going anywhere soon. The population is getting larger surely it stands to reason that the watches, jewellery etc will do to.

Well, the awesome thing about Rolex is that they produce watches of various sizes and most of them are totally wearable to almost anybody.
At Rolex, 36 mm wears pretty large, as so 40 mm, and even 34mm is ok for most wrists.
So, there are plenty of options for us with skinnier wrists, though I tried Sky Dweller and found it very well proportioned and not too big at all (on the other hand, I found DSSD really huge).

I have small wrists (17.5cm / 6.9in) and prefer big sports watches as long as there's no overhang. I do appreciate sub 40mm dress pieces.

It depends what do you like but for me the best size is 42 I had GMT 2 it's a nice watch indeed but it was small that's why I decided to sell it, also I'm wearing AP FC 44 it's really cool watch.

It's not complicated: buy and wear what you want. And appreciate others' choices. The more people who like the hobby, the better.

What's life without taking risks and always playing it safe? In 10/15 years, some of us will much older and can pass on these supposedly big watches to our kids or still be wearing them.

I have a 6.5 wrist and the Yatchmaster (44m) looks perfectly ok my wrist
