You are right. Unfortunately everyone on this forum thinks the hollow ground screw driver is a must have. It is not.

It is a high quality item. Heating up screw ends are just part of the process but the hollow ground driver is a perfect fit and will in no way bugger up the slot as long as you stay centered. Its a much more user friendly screwdriver and is why the Rolex 2100 commands so much money. I consider this its sexy cousin and is the nicest driver I own.

I noticed on the tip there are places for 2 screws to hold the tip in. Only 1 of mine has a screw in it, does yours have 1 or 2?

Mine only has one. Probably redundancy for if it gets stripped etc. Shouldnt take too much set screw pressure to hold the bit in place.

I received one of these screwdrivers today, and wow what a world of difference. Absolutely effortless for Oyster bracelet links, once the bracelet has been heated up with a hairdryer.

I broke one of the hollow ground tips on the Bergeon 1.6mm on its first day - the edges just sheared right off when I applied a little torque to tighten the screw.

I also ordered the Esslinger 2100 tool and while it is nicely made, the grip and control I can get with the larger 1.7mm screwdriver really is unmatched.

And here's a comparison with the three tools I have to resize Oyster bracelets.The Bergeon so far has been the most disappointing, although it is what Rolex distributes to its ADs in the toolkit. At 1.6mm there's a tiny bit of play, and it can chew screws up if not used properly. The fit of the Horofix screwdrivers are perfect.

And this is what happened with the hollow ground tip on the first use:

That's a totally cool tool (Rolex Green too), it looks more substantial with the wider body to hold onto to get leverage on the screw.

It’s important to keep downforce on a hollow ground screwdriver or the tip can break off if you are just turning with no pushing down as well.

No it wont. I took the tips out and the shaft of the Horofix is wider than the Bergeon. However if you have a lathe or wanted to try sand the shaft down a bit I think it wouldnt take much and the length looks like it would just make the set screw on the Bergeon. But it would taking some metal removal to make it work.

No need to go fancy, German Wiha miniature screwdrivers are extremely well made, work like a charm, and cost about $4 from McMaster or other supply.

Since this screwdriver is out of stock, any suggestions on next-best? I’ll plan to buy one of these when available but wouldn’t mind having a better one that I currently have at the moment. I nicked up the screw face a bit (links are ok), and it’s a very minor peeve right now. I’d like to have a better screw driver, cost isn’t all that important, quality and usefulness much more so.

Lack of heating the screw area "could" also be the reason some of the tips are snapping . . .very little torque is required once the loctite has been loosened.
