Fortunately I Didn’t Take the Deepsea Home - Wow.

I proudly posted earlier finding a Deepsea Blue Dial I made a bit of quick decision to acquire, and to have it sent home to Alaska while I finished a transaction in Tampa and finished my trip to Alabama and Washington DC.

In the back of my mind something was just gnawing at me a little, and I went home and remembered wasn’t maybe that watch updated this year? Sure enough. A quick call to the AD (who I have bought from before) and they said no problem and undid the first deal on the older version, and I have a deposit in place for their first arrival of the redesign which they ordered while attending Baselworld 2018.

Wow. While the original is a spectacular watch and has a unique colloector’s status, I can’t imagine having made that discovery say two weeks from now.

Hoping by October. Any insight would be great.

I’m surprised you didn’t know about the 126660 prior to going for it but glad to hear you were able to straighten it out with the AD. Honestly speaking, each version is a solid reference but I would also want the latest iteration, especially with this model.

I know right? This year I paid just vague attention as I was locked in on a Sky Dweller. When I saw the Deepsea today it just blew up all of my negative assumptions about that watch.

Just in time for you, but I still would have chosen the original

If you liked the older, you will be even more pleased with the new one. The bracelet wears a lot better and the watch sits better, somehow maybe smaller. I have owned the Deepsea twice before so have a pretty good relationship with the older model.
Rolex did some witchcraft on this watch because it just fits better which in turn looks better on the wrist. The proportions look more cohesive. The bodybuilder with skinny legs look is gone, which no offense to the older model. If this didn't get rectified I would have still bought it in the older form as I never actually found the bracelet uncomfortable.

It's still a hunk of metal, but for me that is what I love about the Deepsea. It is an excess of all things Rolex....big extreme oyster case expression, biggest coolest clasp in the business, 5mm domed(only Rolex to have this) sapphire crystal that has a vintage plexi look to it, huge crown to wind the buttery smooth movement and possibly the most interesting dial I think Rolex makes.

This watch is a yuuuuge hit, so congrats months in advance.

The dial is amazing, although I personally dislike the “ring lock etc.” text. But it is a beauty with that little crown at 6. Hope you get it soon!

Spot on for me as well.
I love the original but flipped mine for the new 126660. They really perfected it this time around. I wouldn't change a thing.
OP - you will love it! Congrats in advance!

after trying both i actually prefer the old version. I always thought the bracelet was a bit thin and that was a negative but after seeing the thicker one and trying it on I see why they did the smaller bracelet initially. The old bracelet wears better for sure.

The new one is close to perfection, but the old one in all it’s clumsiness has its appeal to me. Happy for the OP that he gets the one he wants. DSSD is pinnacle of engineering

Love my 126660 but my GMT now feels like a ladies watch when I put it on after wearing the JC for a few days. Good luck and enjoy - hopefully you will have soon. I found mine with blind luck at a local AD first visit.

Switching between the DSSD and GMT definitely feels and looks different, but it generally doesn't take too long to make the adjustment visually speaking.

If not mistaken, new movement and wider bracelet.

New movement 3235 has Chronergy escapement, Parachrom hairspring, greater accuracy, magnetic resistance. As a result it is 10 times less susceptible to shock-related precision issues. The escapement’s efficiency paired with a new barrel architecture provides a 70 hour power reserve (almost a day more over the Calibre 3135-fitted Deepsea’s approximate 50 hours). Ceramic. The Calibre 3235 fitted in the new Deepsea has gone through the re-vamped certification. A 5-year warranty.

New lugs with rounder taper and a millimeter thinner. New wider band with redesigned more symetrical taper. Wears with greater balance, appears to have greater symmetry. Longer second and minute hand by about a millimeter so they are perfectly aligned with indices rather than being short of them. Resized Oysterlock spring-loaded safety clasp. The indices are smaller, with the stick indices at 6 and 9 o’ clock being thinner. Some minor font changes. The newest model looks tighter.

Don't forget a significantly better power reserve!

Greater accuracy I don’t think is true. They are both the exact same +/- 2. There is zero practical difference in that regard

Poor phrasing on my part. It’s movement is less susceptible to environmental precision interferences such as shock (10X) and magnetic fields.

I own the “old”deep blue. I’ve seen the deep blue 2018.. in my opinion.... the old version looks better in wrist shots. I bought mine a few years ago and have had offers for more than my purchase price after taxes.... but I’m not selling. You cannot go wrong with either. If I had my choice betweeen the two, I’d go with the old version for resale. The new doesn’t look proportioned correctly in pictures. I never thought I’d say this because I was considering doing a trade for a new... and my AD was perfectly willing to make that trade. They told,me,I’d be getting the worse of the deal. Time will tell. Both watches are beautiful, but the legs on the old make the dial pop to my eyes. I’m in the minority likely. Frankly, I’d trade the deep blue for a Kermit if anyone is interested... but I’d dearly miss the deep blue afterwards and likely wonder,if I’d made the right choice. Can’t win.

Déjà vu all over again.

When I bought my redesigned 42mm Rolex Explorer II in May 2014, the guys with skin in on the old design almost to a person preferred the one they had to the new one in spite of the new design, and the new movement. And they really had a good time bashing the 24 hour orange hand (clownish was a favorite). Of course the broader Rolex community responded with balance.

Time marches forward, along with the watches that keep it. Love them all, old and new.

Congrats on your decision to go with new DBlue. I sold my old reference already and now waiting for a call from AD to pick up 126660. While I appreciated very much the significance of the original reference the updated D Blue is so much better !
