Is it safe to wear a rolex in South Africa?

All,

I will travel to South Africa during my vacations, and would like to know if it's safe to wear my Submariner (and where/when).

I will stay in Cape Town, Knysna, Plettenberg, Johannesburg and Kruger Park.

I live in São Paulo, Brazil, so I am pretty much used to put my watch in my pocket depending on where I go.

Thank you,
Eduardo Jorge

It is not safe to wear a Rolex anywhere. I should be kept in a bank safe deposit vault and only viewed there. Alternatively, send it to me and I will make sure it is kept safe.

I would leave it at home but then again I would do likewise if I was visiting brasil. Then again us Americans stick out like a sore thumb abroad

I think you already have pretty good judgment by what you wrote. Maybe throw a strap on it to make it look less "Rolexey" If it's something you'll worry about it may take away from relaxation, it may be better to leave it at home.

Wear something else and don't worry about it. Why stress?

My brother in law is in South Africa right now visiting family. He's in Pretoria and Johannesburg. I know he is wearing his DJ ll every day and his cousin has many Rolex's and other high end watches he wears daily.

It's perfectly safe assuming your avoiding the combat zones of J'burg and Cape Town. Nothing to worry about in the other sleepy little coastal towns, and Kruger is fine. So I'm guessing you guys are flying from J'burg to Cape Town then driving? Some of the best coast line in the world.

Picture 1 is a rest stop on South Africa highway 17 driving to Bulembu, Swaziland from Johannesburg.

You will be fine man. Think common sense plays a big role too. Don't flash it around though. Doubt our "dodgy" places is worse than your "dodgy" places :)

Life's too short to worry about it. Just avoid shady areas, same as you would at home.

I stay in Pretoria and wear one of my Rolexes every day of my life - most people do'nt even notice it. Avoid wearing flashy gold chains or large gold rings, that will attract attention and use your common sense when its comes to dodgy looking people and places. Enjoy South Africa !

You attract your own attention, if you go around anywhere in the world flashing your watch you are going to attract the wrong attention. If you wear it normally, you will be fine.

Kind regards,

Dino

There are no safe places to wear a Rolex these days except in a bank vault. Then again...... But put a strap on it and don't overdo it and you'll be fine.

I've never ever had a single problem. I posted pictures here on TRF a couple of months ago of me on a street outside Accra, Ghana wearing a Rolex. Are there places I wouldn't wear a Rolex? You bet. But to say, "there are no safe places" is absurd.
