Not at all! New members are the life's blood of TRF.

That's my point. I'm trying to embrace the idea that "is it safe" and " Coke or Pepsi" / discount / Costco threads are here to stay...

But folks can still make good fun of them!

Lets get back to the thread topic: SAFETY!

Today at work I looked down at my SubC and saw that MY SAFETY CLASP WAS UNDONE!

AAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!!!

I quickly and carefully fastened the safety clasp and then checked all major systems on the watch to ensure that it hadn't been hacked into or otherwise broken.

Thankfully, it seems to be fine, although I intend on running more in depth system checks this evening once the Sub and I are locked into the vault.

Further, I saw a small tear in my shirt (visible in picture)--unsure if its related, but this also requires further investigation (I may cease wearing shirts to work until the source of the tear is determined).

The bottom line is, I am unsure if its safe to wear my watch at work.

Without offending anyone, there is nothing particularly special about a Rolex in South Africa. I wore one for decades without a problem. I definitely wouldn't allow my wife to be dripping with diamonds if she went out though!

Perfectly safe - worn mine there several times. Like any place you travel, just be aware of your surroundings.

Be sure to see the Graff vineyard in Stellenbosch and Jones Beach!

I reside in one of the most affluent areas in Johannesburg South Africa. Generally towards the festive season there is an increase in criminal activity. In the past two weeks there have been occurrences in the local paper(one incident making front page)where people have been targeted and followed home from shopping malls and robbed at gunpoint for their watches in particular. In one instance victim reports it taking less than 30 seconds so very lucrative given the value of items obtained in such a short period of time. In general not recommended because even if item is insured the emotional trauma resulting from such an experience is just not worth it.

For tourists, wear Seiko or Casio. Just for a peace of mind.

I guess we can all ask this question whether we are in Atlanta, New York, Washington, DC or any major US city. I've worn my Rolexes everywhere without worry, otherwise I'd wear a Casio watch. If you are worried about wearing your Rolex in Africa, leave it home or in your safe deposit box, otherwise enjoy wearing your watch wherever you go, just be careful where you go when in a major city -- sometimes it's not just the watch criminal elements are interest in. Just my .02.

I think that if you aren't flashy about wearing your watch you should be alright in South Africa. Don't wander off into lonely parts by yourself and you should be fine.

Ive worn them in Iraq , Saudi , Equatorial Guinea , Nigeria and I'm currently sat in Siberia as i write this.
The only place I had a problem was Equatorial Guinea when I had an Omega Speedster broad arrow stolen from my room by the maid , my fault I guess for leaving it unattended.
The sickening thing was that she'd have been lucky to sell it for more than $100 there and probably never even knew what she had , I still used to say good morning to her every day afterwards even though I was sure she'd taken it

That is a big story the media never discusses.

Just have an insurance policy and you won't have to worry.

I have never in my life been a part of any website or web community where so many people were so scared of everyday life.

Do the people who post these threads think NO ONE in the history of "fill in the blank country/city" has ever worn a watch there before that cost more than $12.99.

Final answer on this for every country. If you are not sufficient in your ability to take care of yourself in where ever than please do not take anything of value with you. If you have ANY situational awareness to the point where it would be safe to take something of value than you probably wouldn't be asking this question in the first place.

So the answer is an unequivocal NO , for you it probably is not safe. Again, if you were the type of person for whom said situation would be safe, you wouldn't be asking in the first place.

I would also strongly consider hiring someone to carry your wallet for you also.

Warning .....

....you can wear a Rolex anywhere in Africa, but please please (please) do not wear a Longines GMT. They have been known to attract lions, which are content to lick the watch (and watch only), but dare you try and move and they will gobble you up! That's why I decided to move to the BLNR ...got tired of being big-cat-catnip.

Beware the lion-attracting Longines! Murder I tell ya!

But a Rolex? You're fine! Too high calorie for lions (leopards on the other hand ....)

I have found that indigenous people of countries that have traditionally been shat upon by others, whether by their own people or colonialists, inflict higher levels of violence than would be expected.
My sister used to live in Kenya, I know it's a different country, and I never visited her. Heard of arms being macheted off just for the watch. No, that's no lie.
I don't beleive in babying a watch, but why risk life and limb for it.
Buy a nice Casio for places where life has less value.
Regards

If you are asking that question, then maybe it is not just the watch you should be worrying about.

This. Obviously common sense plays a part. Definitely wouldn't want to go to an area known for violence and then go deeper into the lion's den (pun not intended).

Agree. We all started out as "new members" when we joined. I am a new member.
Some of us are fortunate in life to be able to afford many luxury items. In this case, many high end Rolex watches. But some people saved several years to finally be able to buy an entry level Rolex. To them, this is their baby, their dream come true. The question they asked may seem silly to us (like the Is it safe to wear in McDonald's), but to them, they just want to protect the precious watch that they saved years for.
I love cars and have owned a few decent cars. A few times, I would have someone in the car wash driving a used Mercedes C300 or lower model come and talk to me about my car, saying how nice it is and then started talking about their car, what they have done to it. They are proud and happy. They treat it like a Rolls Royce. I think that's nice. I don't look down on people driving lesser car than me. It is the same way here. I think it is a funny question to ask, but I would never ban or not allow them here just because they care too much about their watch.
