I struggle with this my self. My current collection strategy consists of getting matching 5 and 6 digit references. IE, 16710/116710, 16600/116600, 14060/114060. I keep telling my self that once I get the 116710 and 114060 I will be done..

The problem then becomes wearing them as I want to wear them all!

I'm at 5 right now....I really enjoy all of them in my collection. Are there others I still want? Yes...am I in a hurry to rush out and buy them no. I have decided there is too much hassle and regret in selling and trading so I try to really make sure when I add one it is not a passing fancy. I don't believe there is a perfect number for me I will just see where WISdom leads me.

I agree. Five is a reasonable number for the inventory.

I have about 25 watches. I forget the exact number and I'm too lazy to get up and do a count now.

I keep saying that I have enough, but I keep finding watches that I just have to have.

I’d like to add three more and I think I’d be done.

This is my current current collection

I’d add:

16710
5712
Patek annual calendar or some sort. Maybe a 5146

Using some verbiage from another post, "Frankly between all the Rolex, Omegas, Tudors, and other sorted brands I pretty much need a spread sheet to keep track of them. Maybe it's a matter of too much too soon but really none of them were special in my eye. I've decided to pair down the collection to a few which I'll keep. The remainder will go sooner or later. It seems I gain satisfaction more from the hunt than the accomplishment. Reminds me of the myth of Sisyphus eternally pushing his bolder."

I'd like to know the right number, but I'm not sure where it is yet. I vasilate between every watch on the planet, and owning one.

Extremes I guess.

I have now 5 and next month i will have 7. IMO i need to have ownership of the watch before i can decide do i like it or not. 95% of the time i wear my Explorer II so practically all the other 6 watches are not needed.

But that is not the truth at all as i will get bored. Boredom is prevented also knowing that i have other options even that i do not tend to wear them that much. So if i would sell those 6 watches i would buy more anyway. As the diagnosis is watchenthusiast, i think the most wise way to handle the situation is to acquire pieces that have both of these attributes: keeps the value and looks good.

I often look at my watches and wipe with silk cloth after that. This seems to be the best way for me to enjoy these :) And i will buy more and maybe some day i will even wear those more :DD

Generally I wear my luxury watches to work M to F and use an affordable or beater on the weekends. My theory is that worn in rotation with a sufficient interval between wearing will extend the time to service and the life of the strap and even bracelets like a Jubilee. So my number is 10, that way each is running for about 40+ hrs in a ~340 hr 2 week period or ~12% of the time. My issue is that I have picked up too many “beaters” and vintage curiosities that are used infrequently and cannot be justified so I have some thinning to do.

I’ve fallen in love with pm models so it’s far fewer watches for me. I prefer to wear and enjoy a model on my wrist versus having a big collection.

I’ve got a blro. Thinking of another pm model.

I currently have 3 after down sizing my collection. I realized that I rather have 3 that I wear often then 7 that just sit and collect dust. A watch is nothing if it can’t be worn and enjoyed.

Also makes the daily decision easier for what watch to wear but I guess that’s a champagne problem...

I can't get rid of watches. It's the same pathology as serial killers who keep mementos of their, umm, "hobby."

I have a quartz Seiko I bought almost 30 years, the first watch I ever bought. It has a hideous gold pvd bracelet and has an approximate value of nothing. but I refuse to toss it.

A few years later I was buying a watch for my mother, and decided to get a new one for myself. So I also have a Movado museum, with a black pvd case. Not gonna lie, I still love the look of that one.

Then about 15 years ago my employer gave me a YG Oscar Waldan Tiffany watch. Very sharp. Its engraved so its not worth anything to anyone but me.

Another 5 years, and my wife got tired of hearing me talk about buying a Breitling, so she just went ahead and bought a Colt chronograph. It's my only chronograph, so I obviously have to keep that one.

Then I picked up a Raymond Weil Maestro. It's my only rectangular case, so clearly it cannot be given up without losing a vital bit of versatility.

That's when I got serious, shot the lock off my wallet and bought a z-blue Milgauss. That stood out too much in my watch case, so I balanced it out with TT GMT.
