Has this happened to you?
So for most of my life I have loved watches. I can remember being a kid and looking through Spiegel catalogs and the like figuring out which Seiko or Hamilton watch I lusted after the most. My family acknowledged my passion and blessed me with a piece here and there until I was able to support this need on my own with an occasional new acquisition.
Nothing extravagant was added to my collection until I was in my 30s and acquired a Tag. A few years later it was joined by a Ball and later a Breitling. The collection was looking up. The other thing I noticed was the apparent activity of inanimate objects. Stair railing, mailboxes, walls, and just about anything I would pass would jump into the path of the watch swinging on my wrist in an apparent kamikaze mission! This situation materialized the most when a watch was new and tapered off in relation to how many battle scars were obtained. I even ran my Tag over with my Jeep’s 40” tire...luckily my wrist was not in the band at the time! In the past several months, I have been fortunate to have moved my watch collection more upscale including two Rolex’s and I have found myself utilizing very different walking habits. I have made it more difficult for walls to dive into my watch by walking on the right side of hallways. When traveling next to a railing, I tend to keep my arm at a 90’ angle so my watch is as far from the railing as possible. I never take my watch off and put it on a tire anymore...DUH! Anyway now that I have collected pieces that I truly love, I am going out of my way to keep them damage free. I even put them in little watch cases and store them in a safe... Have any of you had this experience? I can’t believe that I am the only one.... Cheers, Allan |

Keeping my watches damage-free is something I don't even aspire to.
I don't mistreat my watches, but the world is so full of hazards that it is impossible to avoid them all. I do keep my ten most valuable watches in a safe deposit box at the bank, though.

Cue the bubblewrapped-watch-on-the-wrist image.
We all do our best to not flail our arms around and to not randomly smash into things but apparently that's just part of life - at least it is for me. |

I don’t purposely add scratches or dents to my watches but I don’t baby them either.
My scratches and dents tell my story with my watches and adds character. Over time this becomes a natural patina that maps your experiences over time. This small dent at the bottom right lug in the picture was caused at Pablo Escobar’s Beach house in Tulum as I was adjusting the back rest of my Beach chair. Cheers! I tend to take good care of my watches. I paid good money for them, and I guess I figure I want them to stay looking good. Wrist awareness is the name of the game, so I don't wear mine for any activity if I think they'll get beaten up.
Having said that, when I see guys doing real world activities and wearing theirs with reckless abandon, I wish I could be more like them |

But own watch is one thing, even more worrying when it's not mine sometimes a borrowed/ontrial piece, more often someone else's I'm "transporting" for various reasons... especially pieces which I know are worth more than my life. Narrow corridors of red brick are the worst. Have done damage even when wrist is covered by jacket sleeve. It's become habit to put left hand on right shoulder with wrist on chest below chin to navigate tight corridors sad, but prevention is easier/cheaper than fixing damage. |

I'm harder on my watches at work. So my 5 digit Sub is my daily and my other watches I wear while I am not at work.

Due to the job I was doing at the time - climbing in and out of large storage tanks, scrambling over pipework and the like - I stopped wearing my Rolex and bought a cheapy quartz job. Over time it was just easier to keep wearing the cheap daily than swapping.
Fast forward to a few months later and returning home after a nice evening out with friends to find the house burgled. Rolex Explorer I and numerous other items of jewellery/electrical goods gone. Wear your Rolex and enjoy it. If it gets a couple of dings, does it really matter, you've still got your nice watch. As a footnote, I got my Exp I back a few months later when said felon tried to sell it to an eagle-eyed jeweller who called in the rozzers. However, it somehow felt tainted as some other ne'er-do-well had worn it so I chipped it in for something else. An action I regret to this very day BTW. |

No.
I live my life and wear my watches. My watches do not wear me.

I thought this was going to be the start of an infomercial.
I don't baby my watches, but I take them off when they are a hindrance. |

I see your point! I don't baby mine as I know the odd nick and scratch is inevitable. However, I am always cognizant of what I am doing and I don't put them in deliberate in deliberate risk if I can keep from it.

That's why I waited until I was old and tired before getting into nice watches.

Holy cow...that picture background. Hilarious.
As for the watch protection behavior. I do see myself more cautious too. It is amazing how many opportunities arise to smack or scratch the watch. |
