As many have said: "You need to focus on the one you really want." If you're really not sure which one it is... Then continue saving until you know for certain.

I love 5 series subs for the proportions and I actually prefer the aluminum bezel inserts - they're less flashy. I love the 6 series for the glidelock bracelet and the weight. I'm fortunate enough to have an example of each.

But that is me. I believe you may be happier with a ceramic dial and a date and that you're only settling on something more affordable. I wouldn't recommend that.

Owning both the new and older Sub generations, the new glide lock clasp and bracelet is significantly better and more solid over the older bracelet clasp. That alone, is worth the cost upgrade. IMO Go preowned ceramic Sub. You wont lose any money if you change your mind in a year.

Based what you said about that particular Sub, I would say Explorer.

A Submariner ceramic date is the grail watch. Just feels so hard to spend the extra couple grand on that watch. I figured an Explorer or a used Sub 5 digit could scratch the itch.

I have read this entire thread and a few things are apparent....

1. You want a Sub
2. An Expl would probably leave you wanting (sub is your grail)
3. Don't forget there's always another grail (PM Subs)
4. Rolex lasts a lifetime, 12 yrs old is still a kid. Lots of life left.

You know what happens when you scratch an itch...... it still itches.

My daily wearer for quite a while (interrupted by a Bond Seamaster I had for a few years) was a 1972 Seamaster.

Last month I put a 2017 Explorer on my wrist, so now the 45+ year old Seamaster can lay down for a while.

You seem to want the Sub.

It's likely that if you get anything other than the Sub, you'll be wanting.

A Rolex was engineered to last a lifetime so 12 years shouldn't concern you, IMHO.

Happy hunting and congrats in advance.

How do you like your Explorer so far? You didn't consider a Submariner?

That is what I keep hearing. Plus I think all parts can fixed if any issues come up.

Get the sub, sounds like that's the one you really want. It will hold up fine with daily wear

I love it and often check the time without remembering to check the time, if you follow my meaning...

I considered a Submariner (and a Day-Date, and an Explorer II, and a PM GMT) but the Explorer really felt to me like the perfect every day watch for someone like me.

Eh, I think $7k is too much for a 16610 without box and papers. Jewelers on Time is a reputable jeweler though but for that price I would want a full set. You can find full set ceramic Sub Dates for $7200-7500 with patience. Emphasis on patience!!! I think you should wait until after Christmas. January is usually a slow month. I think a good price on a non-engraved 16610 w/o box and papers is anywhere from $5-for 6.5k depending on condition and year. There are so many out there and you can find a nice one for that much. Here in NY I see 16610s come up locally all the time on CL for under $6k especially for just the watch.

If you don't have the knowledge and experience to spot fakes, then buy from a reputable dealer like JoT but if you know what you're doing you can get a much better deal. In fact I also see ceramic No Dates for around $6200-6500. There are much better prices on Chrono24 even now.

This is true. But f acquired from a reputable seller, you wont have issues for quite some time.

Their listing is nice. I've used ebay before, but now prefer Bob's or a trusted seller here (I've sold and purchased on this wonderful forum with no issues). Bob's has 2006 models for the same cost, with box and papers. I got SD from Bobs in 2013, wore it daily until 2017 when it required service. I'll be good to go for another 5 years at least.

They have the watch in store for $6300 and I get a rolex box (not 100% correct box), but I do still have taxes since I am in the same state which puts watch at $6800 with taxes. No papers at all though. It has been serviced by them ($500 value) and they offer a warranty with the watch.

Not sure. You still think it's a bad a deal?

Here you go. Look through all of these listings. You may find a jeweler close to you in addition to a much better price. Like I said w/o a full set you shouldn't pay $7k for a 16610.

The price is within the fair range. $6800 with tax is not bad but you can do better. There are many reputable sellers on Chrono24 and they will all be in great condition and working properly. If you buy from a reputable out of state dealer you won't have to pay tax. You can get an engraved rehaut one for that price if you want. It all depends on your preference. I can vouch for Sea Wave Diamonds from NY as well as Tarrytown jewelers. I've had friends who have bought from both and neither had any issues.
