DJII/Explorer 1

I've been grappling with this question in my head for some time now and would love to hear others' opinions. What is the difference, versatility speaking, between a DJII smooth bezel and an Ex1? Of course the DJII has polished center links and a date function whereas the ex1 is fully brushed and doesnt have a date. However, it seems that the Ex1 is considered a classic tool watch that can be worn in the most extreme of situations without regard. How is the smooth dial DJII different?

I know this question was not asked in the most eloquent of ways but I'd like to hear your thoughts!

both have work horse movements and both feature rugged oyster cases. i suppose one could make an argument that the explorer's smaller size, lack of cyclops and brushed links make it more robust, but, fundamentally, there's not much difference between the two. marketing and history of the two models dictate otherwise, of course.

As far as versatility, they're about equal. Either can be worn with anything from shorts to suits. The difference in size is negligible. Both are modern interpretations of Rolex icons dating back decades. The biggest difference I think is that the DJII would be easier for non-WIS to recognize as a Rolex, but few outside your circle (family/friends/co-workers) would mention anything. The Explorer (IMHO) carries signs of wear better that a watch with polished bezels, lugs and links.
As for advice on choosing, you recognize the differences which play on personal preferences: date or no, dressier vs casual, dial color and marker options, etc. So you're on your own there (although I'd be happy to tell you why I'd choose the DJII).

Its not a question of which one to buy. I already have a smooth bezel DJII. It's more a question of why the DJII is more likely to be "babied" when an ex1 is worn to take anything even though they are virtually the same watch.

Explorer is the basic sport watch, DJ is a sort of iconic bracelet semi-dress watch... kind of depends on your personality and how you'll use the watch.

I love your DJII - it's my favorite DJII. A DJ is certainly capable of taking abuse the same as an explorer so take it on some expeditions.

I am biased but Explorer I is the way to go. It's the most beautiful watch ever manufactured.

I don't think you have to "baby" any Rolex, to include these two. I think the PCL's of the DJ are going to show a few more scratches, but that's about it.

They are functionally the same watch with the exception of the date. Which speaks more to your spirit and sensibility? If your a casual guy that occasionally needs to get dressed up, get the Explorer. If you're in an office but also want something that can take a beating on the weekends, get the DJII. You obviously have a lot more options with the Datejust.

Will you miss having the date on your wrist? Do PCLs bother you? That's what it would come down to for me. I believe the Explorer would look just as "dressy" as a DJII except for the PCL. In any case, you really can't go wrong either way.

I already have a DJII. I have no interest in getting an Ex1. I just see a huge parallel between the two and wanted to hear everyone else's opinions regarding the similarities between the two that are I don't think have ever been discussed on here. For reference this is my DJII:

and I think the Ex1 looks exactly the same with a different variation dial and no date:

They have the same bracelet, case, bezel, and twin lock crown so I find it very interesting that the Ex1 is seen as a tool watch and the 116300 DJII is considering a dressier watch simply because of the PCL.

Just a minor clarification. The EXP has a 39mm case whereas the DJII has a 41mm case. The DJII's case is also polished at the lugs, whereas the EXP is brushed.

And...you can also get the DJII in TT white or yellow gold and diamonds. That might also be what distinguishes it from the Explorer which is only offered with one dial color and brushed SS.

DJ is ubiquitous and readily identifiable as a Rolex.

Explorer I is not as common and flies under the radar.

Brushed links do seem to age better than PCLs but it's not a major consideration.

I have an Explorer, enjoy it's versatility, durability and subtlety. If considered a tool watch, it is perhaps less so than a Sub or SD.
