Ran into a fake Rolex today.. Why just why??

I was at work and I was helping a customer. I noticed he had on what looked like an older Sub. I commented on it and he said thanks and stuck his wrist out so I could get a better look. It looked good to me briefly. It looked to be a Sub 5512 or 5513. I looked at it and told him "nice watch Sir."

To which he replied its a fake. I was a bit taken back. Before I could answer he said "Well it's just like yours except I didn't pay $5000 dollars for it." I politely replied well it looks good and finished our transaction.

I wouldn't normally call someone out as I feel it lacks class. Beyond that I was at work and had to remain professional.

I guess I'm wondering why someone would wear a fake Rolex. Why a fake anything ?? There is no resale or residual value there. Certainly no quality to speak of. It defeats the entire purpose of owning a Rolex.
There is also no history as its a fake.

I didn't think they made copies of old watches. I knew they made copies of new stuff. I've seen those. This looked scary good even after looking right at it.

Maybe it's been too long of a week for me.

Same reason why people wear knock off brand apparel. It's more about the appearance rather than the appreciation of said product.

It could also have been real and his response was the fake.
