All I ever wanted was one more watch.
The perpetual search, the ever burning question - How many watches do you need? I used to think it was 3 then 5. For a time I thought 7 then 8 and I once briefly danced with 10 then 12 but I think I finally understand.
Whilst I take my hat of to super collectors and those with multiple offerings I'm beginning to realise that maybe just maybe the sweet spot is 5. Twelve seems crazy in hindsight, 8 means there are long gaps between wear and I'm starting to think that to much of a choice isn't such a good thing. if you really have a GOOD thing. I mean one wife is enough right why are watches different? So today the downsize begins. I have my fabulous 5 in mind, yes one of them may even become an upgrade in time. In due course 2 will come graduation gifts, which leaves 3 for heirlooms. By then I'll be old enough that I won't need so many. Yes I'm fortunate enough to own 1 let alone 5 and I am truly thankful for it but Who else has seen the light and downsisized |

Sounds reasonable, so I wonder now, what are the five?

I've never had the desire to have a massive collection. 5 is a fair number.
So what's on the list? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

For me it is not about the number of watches as much as it is the passion for the watches that I own. I have owned more, 14-15, and less, 1-2, and have found that it is ok not to wear a watch for awhile if you still have the passion for it. I am currently at 12 and have taken a slight pause. Will the number grow or diminish. I don't know. I am just enjoying what I have.

I was up to 4 and I started seeing gaps in wearing them and more of a pain deciding which one to wear. So I went back to 3 which I think is PERFECT!! Maybe having a few sitting for a month will be cool one day but right now I want to wear them consistently. So the three amigos for me!!

I've had 5 in the last 2+ years, I want to downsize to 3. That seems to be the ideal rotation for me. Problem is which 2 to let go.

I have 6 and gone from 3 to 8 of varying brands. I've settled on 6 but I do change them sometimes, if one comes one existing one goes. I think I have settled on 6 because that's what my winder will hold and I don't like seeing an empty space! But it is true some don't get worn (Omega PO Titanium, its a bit on the thick side) because I always go for my two favourites (114060 and 116622 blue depending on the occasion)

Great rational. My sweet spot would be 3, and even that is a bit much.

I got up to 8 and had to downsize for the same reasons listed. During my downsize, I also right-sized: Got rid of all the watches I lost the passion for, eliminated the "beaters", and stacked the box with 5 that are my perfect collection. With no beaters in the box, I am able to wear and enjoy Each one, not just when dressed up or at work, but all the time.
5 is a great number. For me it's (1) an all 'rounder -- Explorer 214270; (2) a traveler -- GMT 116710BLNR; (3) a diver -- Blancpain Bathyscaphe on sailcloth; (4) a dress timepiece -- Dornblüth and Sohn Central Seconds; and (5) a fun, versatile icon -- Sub Hulk 116610LV. Enjoy the collecting! |

My daily collection consists of 3 Rolex (Submariner, Explorer, and GMT) and an Omega Planet Ocean. This is a good number and diversification that works well for me, and would neither add to nor reduce.
Also have a Breitling, Ulysses Nardin and an Omega Semaster tucked away in a safety deposit box for the past several years. If anything, it is one (or all) of these three that I would sell if I ever got the urge to do so. |

It's threads like this that I wish had a mandatory photo requirement. We need to merge this one with the "show your full collection in one picture" thread. Nice collection you have there. A little jealous of those who got in on the Kermit when it was still affordable. Good spread of colors, too. |

Makes sense, once you've had a few watches and know what you like it's natural to consolidate down to 3-5. It's been my case.

I had up to 10 pieces but have now gone down to 3 and will likely settle at 5.

I think my perfect number is 8. Currently at 6 but would love to upgrade with a couple more PM's. I like the variety of colors, metals, and bezels.

Guys, I'm looking for a Rolex GMT Master II 116710BLNR. Any help?
I live in Italy but I'm a bit paranoid about the gray market. Thanks. |

I only have one watch. In a perfect world I would probably be able to comfortably rotate 3-5 watches without missing a beat.
For a Rolex trio I would probably own: YG Gold/Green Dial Daytona a la McGregor (land) SD43 (sea) SS white SkyD (air) Permitting five Rolex, I would add color: Blue Sub BLRO Ouch...My imaginary wallet hurts.

Hi everyone,
I have 7 but realistically I only wear 3 - 4 on a daily basis. White face Explorer 11 - Outdoor, beach holiday watch. Non date Sub (1997) - My first Rolex (never really gets much wrist time) GMT Black - My traveling watch. White SS Daytona - My every day watch. Additional impulse purchases: Omega Speed master 40th Anniversary moon. Oris TT3 Williams Oris F1 GP Oh and finally a very old Tag two tone!! I know that makes technically 8. |

I've recently sold quite a few, had up to 10. Took me a while to focus in on what I REALLY like/want.....enjoyment of the process.....love it!
Sometimes I came out ahead...most times not ! But I knew that would be the case, when going through the process of settling down, (somewhat) so no regrets 4 at the moment, probably settle between 5-6. Any flipping/selling from now on will stay within that range. Really enjoying the journey |

If I had the money, I would probably have 15+ watches. However, I think 3-5 is the sweet spot! I hope to be there soon.

I have about 20 including 4 Rolexes. I try to rotate them all on a daily basis, although some of them don't get worn all that much. I'm a buyer, not a flipper. I buy what I like and keep it.
