Coming around to NATO fandom

I used to fall squarely in the camp which asked, "why would I want to put a nylon strap on a nice watch?" Though I had a few NATOs, I didn't wear them much.

Lately, I've been a little obsessed with rocking them.

Anyone else been similarly converted from anti-NATO to pro-NATO?

Same here. I just got a nato for the first time a few weeks ago. I'm loving it.

Wow. Your Sea Dweller on a stitched blue-gray NATO is nearly identical to my daily wearer/set-up (a 16610 on the same watch strap).

As a substitute (or when the blue-gray is in the washer), I'll sometimes switch to an all-black NATO with black PVD hardware.

That's my favorite NATO and it's really comfortable. I just ordered a few new ones from BluShark yesterday, so I am psyched to try them on my SD when they arrive this week.

I like the NATO as an alternative to a bracelet. I will put one on a watch on occasion.

I was never really anti-nato...its a cool tradition! I get in the mood for them and run them from time to time on most of my watches. The only one in my collection I just can't put one on is my Daytona.

Exactly. I've come around to the idea of NATOs on divers and field watches, but I don't like them on Daytonas and GMTs, personally.

Back at it again today!

Speedy's look great on NATO. I find omega to be great on all strap types, where as Rolex looks best on the bracelet imo....

NATO's are the way to go. I always cut off the extra security band.

I run natos on all of my other watches apart from my rolex. That's not because I don't like them on there, it's just that I haven't got the nerves to actually try and get the bracelet off either of them in case of scratches. I love my Omega PO on one..

I just had three more arrive today. After this brand was mentioned in another thread, I gave them a look. Nicest hardware and most comfortable of any I've tried to date.

I'm a recent NATO strap convert. I wear my Seiko SKX watches exclusively on NATOs.

I WAS not a fan of NATO straps, and have been guilty of accusing wearers of cheapening their watch ! I’m starting to come around (somewhat) now. Recently bought a vintage Tudor with a silver dial for casual summer wear and tried a few on it. They are comfortable, easy to change, and can coordinate with most leisure settings. I do not like the ones with the big rounded loops, and too many rings though !

It's been a while; only two I've liked. One is the fabric strap on the THBBR and the other was a leather Nato on my 14060. The BBR felt like heaven on the fabric strap!!!!

I converted my friend. It's funny how you mentioned cheap nylon strap. I recently spoke to a GMT owner who was complaining about an Omega coming on a cheap nylon strap. I then showed him my Speedy and he's like, "not one of those, that's nice." It was an all black OEM Omega Nato. I told him that this is one of those cheap straps and even showed it to him. He was like, "oh yeah that is one..."

I didn't want him to feel like an ass so I sympathized and said if it only came with a NATO that would suck and that it should come with both the NATO/bracelet together. Maybe, I'll convert him to NATO.

It takes a certain amount of confidence/security to take your expensive watch and stick a NATO on it. It cheapens the watch and makes the watch a lot more subtle. Some people can't stand doing that to such a huge investment. I don't mind. I've gotten compliments on my NATOs.

I'll say this though, the new Rolex bracelets are so good that I'd be hesitant to ever take them off. The older ones though..NATO may as well be an upgrade xD.

Thanks, not bad for a 50 yr old watch !

I seem to prefer NATOs on vintage watches with white/silver dials.

I think they look great!

Won't work for me though - I sweat when I'm working outside and the strap ends up smelling like a wet dog
